A field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur during December 2, 1997 to March 5, 1998, to evaluate the effect of irrigation and nitrogen on growth and yield of carrot (Daucus carota L.). The four irrigation treatments used in the experiment were: 10- no irrigation, 11-2 irrigations at 20 and 40 days after germination (DAG) of seeds, 12-4 irrigations at 20,30,40 and 50 DAG and 13- 6 irrigations at 20, 27, 34, 41, 48 and 55 DAG. The four treatments of nitrogen were: N0 - no application of nitrogen;  N1,  N2, N3 - application of nitrogen at the rates of 40, 70, and 100 kg/ha, respectively. The irrigation and nitrogen treatments were assigned to the main and sub plots, respectively. Both irrigation and nitrogen had influenced the yield and yield components of carrot. Plant height, number of leaves per plant, leaf weight per plant, root size and yield of carrot were increased by increasing level of irrigation and nitrogen. The highest yield of 30.62 t/ha was recorded under the highest levels of irrigation (6 irrigations) and nitrogen (100 kg/ha). The next higher yields were noted under 6 irrigations along with 70 kg N/ha (28.98 t/ha), 6 irrigations together with 40 kg N/ha (28.66 t/ha), and 4 irrigations with 100 kg N/ha (28.66 t/ha). From the results it may be concluded that the highest level of irrigation (six irrigations) along with the application of nitrogen at the rate of 40 kg/ha was judged to be the best combination of the two input variables for approaching the highest yield potential of carrots in BSMRAU farm soil of Madhupur tract.

The aim of investigating the effect of different levels of irrigation and nitrogen on growth and yield of carrot.

The experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur, during rabi season of 1997-1998 with a view to find out the irrigation schedule and optimum level of nitrogen fertilizer for carrot cultivation. The chemical properties of the experimental soil are presented . The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Experimental variables consisted of four irrigation treatments arranged as main-plots and four nitrogen rates as sub- plots. The dimension of each plot was 2.0 m X 1.5 m having a plot to plot and block to block spacing of 1.0 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The number of unit plots were 48. The four irrigation treatments used in the experiment were: 10 - no irrigation, 11-2 irrigations at 20 and 40 days after germination (DAG) of seeds, 12-4 irrigations, at 20, 30,40 and 50 DAG and 13- 6 irrigations, at 20, 27, 34,41, 48 and 55 DAG. The four treatments of nitrogen were: N0 - no application of nitrogen; N1  N2 N3 and N3 - application of nitrogen at the rates of 40, 70, and 100 kg/ha, respectively.Data recorded for different plant characters were complied and tabulated in a proper way and statistically analyzed to find out the significance of variation resulting from the experimental treatments. The analysis of variance of each of the parameters under consideration were performed individually by F (variance ratio) test and the mean difference between treatments were compared by Duncan,s New Multiple Range Test (Gomez & Gomez, 1983).

From this study, it may be concluded that the yield of carrot under each irrigation treatment increased with the increasing rate of N, but with same rate of N the yield was remarkably lower under lower frequency of irrigation. The results also indicated that the impact of irrigation on yield of carrot was more than that of N. Even with the highest level of N along with medium frequency of irrigation in 12N3  treatment, the yield of carrot was 1% lower as compared to 13N2 treatment, where less N was used. It signifies that even under lower rate of N application, a satisfactory yield of carrot may be achieved by maintaining higher moisture regime in the field. These findings suggest that irrigation is indispensable and higher frequency of irrigation along with minimum rate of N (40 kg/ha) are required for producing higher yield' potential of carrot in Salna soil of Madhupur Tract. The minimum use of N fertilizer in this soil will not only save the farmers from financial pressure (by reducing cost of urea fertilizer), but also save the nature from environmental pollution especially soil and water pollution.
