Growth and Yield Models for Gamar (gmelina Arborea) Grown in the Plantations in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The growth and yield models/tables for GmeIina arborea Roxb. (Gamar) in the plantations of Bangladesh have been prepared based on site indices. Models were derived by the data collected from permanent sample plots and also from temporary sample plots. Step-wise and all probable combinations of the independent variables methods were used to select the best suited models subject to the satisfaction of the statistical and biological requirements. Models were selected to estimate the stand dbh, stand mean height, stand basal area per hectare, total overbark volume yield per hectare and under bark volume yield per hectare upto top-end diameter of 10.0 cm. The yield prediction models derived in the study could satisfactorily be used for Gamar plantations within the limitations of stands of ages 3-12 years and site indices of 7.S to 20.0 meters based on a base age of 12 years.

Objectives:

To determine factors along with their log and reciprocal transformations and combinations either in the original or in the transformed forms are used for developing growth and yield models.

Methodology:

Permanent sample plots were laid out in the existing Gamar plantations in the districts of Bandarbans, Rangamati, Chittagong and Dinajpur. The plots were square with an are, of 0.05 ha each. All the trees in a plot were marked at diameter at breast height (dbh) with red paint and numbered at about 1.8 m above the ground level with tin plates. Dbh of all the trees in the plot were measured by diameter tapes for successive six years. Height of the biggest 5-trees were measured for estimation of the dominant height and systematically selected 10 - trees for estimation of mean height of the trees in the plot. The number of permanent sample plots were not enough to project the growth and yield of the species. Therefore, a total of 97 temporary sample plots were also laid out in different plantations to supplement the data. Three plots were selected at random in each selected plantation. The temporary plots were squares of 0.02 ha each. Diameters at breast height (dbh) were measured by diameter tape and corrected to the nearest 0.1 cm for all the trees in the plot. From the analyzes of results of the present study, it may be recommended to use these models for stands of ages 3-12 years and site indices of 7.5 to 20.0 meters based on a base age of 12 years to predict the growth and yield of Gamar in planta tion in Bangladesh under the present management system.
