Economics and Attitude Towards Adoption of Aquaculture Technologies in Ponds in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to determine the costs, returns and profitability of pond fish production in Camilla and Dinajpur districts. A total of 150 sample farmers were selected out of 200 pond owners from Dinajpur (parbotipur, Chirirbandar and Sadar) and Camilla (Kotoali). It was found that per hectare per year gross output was 3616.52 kg in Dinajpur and 3991.18 kg in Camilla. In monetary terms per hectare per year gross costs of pond fish production in Comilla and Dinajpur were Tk. 114367.16 and Tk. 56180.87, while gross returns were Tk. 187090.25 and Tk. 1398l3.60 and net returns were Tk. 72723.09 and Tk. 83632.73, respectively. The findings of this study revealed that the net return from pond fish production in Camilla district was higher than that of Dinajpur district. Cobb- Douglas production function was applied to assess the specific effect of inputs on fish production. In Comilla, the regression coefficients of fingerlings and labour were positive and in Dinajpur the coefficients of fingerlings, fertilizer and labour were positive and were significant at 5% level. The attitude of the fish farmers towards adoption of aquaculture technologies in pond was better in Camilla than that of Dinajpur which was assessed by the perception and social status of the sample pond farmers. It was observed that the level of secondary education was higher in Dinajpur district, while the level of the higher secondary and above education was higher in Comilla district. The main occupation of the sample respondents were agriculture in Dinajpur but it was business in Comilla. Technology adoption was much better in Comilla than in Dinajpur and thus fish farming was more profitable in Comilla.

Methodology:

A survey was conducted to collect the field level data from individual pond owners of Dinajpur and Comilla districts during July 2003 to June 2004. Before collecting the data, a questionnaire was prepared and pretested through direct interview of pond owners. A total of 150 sample farmers were selected taking 75 from Dinajpur (Parbotipur, Chirirbandar and Sadar) out of 95 and 75 from Comilla (Kotoali) out of 105 respondents. A simple tabular method was followed to analyze the data. The sum, mean, percentage, ratio, etc. were the simple statistical measures employed to show the comparative performance of pond fish output. Profitability of pond fish was determined on the basis of net return analysis. A Cobb- Douglas production function model was used to determine the effects of variable inputs on gross returns from pond fish production. The specifications of the model are discussed in the text.

Achievement/Findings:

The production of fish in ponds was higher in Comilla than in Dinajpur. It was found that cost of fingerlings, poison and labour had significant effect on fish production, and lime and feed costs were positive but had no significant effect on pond fish production in Comilla district. The fertilizer had a negative significant effect on production in Comilla district because this input was over used in the production process. The cost of fingerlings, fertilizers and labour had significant effect on production but lime cost, feed cost and poison cost had no significant effect on production in Dinajpur district. There were some social problems, such as illiteracy, lack of information regarding technology, non-availability of quality seed etc., which have hampered fish production in ponds. If farmers get proper training in input use and are provided with modern technology and supply of quality fish seed, higher production and profit will be ensured. The results of the study indicate that the pond fish production can be increased and made more profitable by efficient reallocation of resources In the production process.
