Effect of Water Repellent Additive on the Properties of Wood Based Particleboards

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The effect of wax emulsion varying in concentration from 0 to 1.5% at 0.5% increments on the strength and dimensional stability of urea formaldehyde bonded particle board at three glue levels, 8%, 10% and 12% has been observed. Results show that the addition of wax emulsion is useful to manufacture particle board at low glue level, viz., 8% and 10%. But it does not show any appreciable effect on the board made with 12% glue. The properties of particle boards improve with increasing addition of wax emulsion for 8% glue and for 10% glue, the addition of 1 % wax has beneficial effect on all the properties under investigation. Beyond this, further improvement is not marked. A combination of 10% glue and 1 % wax is found advantageous to manufacture strong particle board having good dimensional stability.

To evaluate the effect of wax emulsion as a water repellent additive with UF glue on properties of wood based particle boards and
To determine the optimum proportion of additive and UF glue for improving dimensional stability of the particle broad.

Methodology:

Veneers of Mangifera indica of .025 (0.635 mm) thickness were dried in the industrial batch oven to 20% moisture content and clipped to face, 3" (7.62cm) length. They were hammer-milled to chips and seived through 16 mesh screen to re move fine dust. The chips were dried to 4 to 6 moisture content and stored in the polythene bag to prevent moisture grain. Single layered particle boards were made in five replications using 8, 10 and 12% glue with 0, 0.5,1 and 1.5% wax based on oven dried chips for each of the glue percentage. The glue sprayed particles were removed from the blender.The specific pressure of 35 kg/ cm² was applied for 6 minutes. Thereafter the pressures was kept reduced at 10 kg/ cm² for 4 Minutes and 3.5 kg/ cm² for 2 minutes. The boards thus made were trimmed and test samples were made from them to determine bend- in strength, tensile strength perpendicular to surface, water absorption and percentage of thickness swelling due to general absorption. The samples were kept in a air conditioned room for two weeks prior to testing. When the samples attained a uniform moisture content of about 10 to 12%, they were put to tests according to IS 2380. In case of tensile strength test, wooden blocks (75mm X 50mm X 25mm) bonded with UF glue having 48% solid content extended with 30% wheat flour and catalysed with 4% hardener were used. Water absorption tests were performed on samples of 100 mm X 100 mm and the amount of water absorbed as well as the percent swelling of thickness was determined after 1,2 and 24 hours soaking.

Achievement/Findings:

The present study shows that addition of wax emulsion improves the dimensional stability of particle boards. For the particle boards made with 8% glue both strength and thickness swelling properties increase with the increase of wax from 0.5% to 1.5%; for the boards made with 10% glue, no appreciable improvement of these properties takes place with wax content more than 1.0%. Application of the additive seems to be necessary for low resin content boards (boards made with 8% and 10% glue) to improve their properties satisfactorily. There is no beneficial effect for using wax emulsion in board making with 12% glue. A combination of 10% glue and 1.0% wax can be suitably used for making particle boards of good strength and dimensional stability.
