Genetic Analysis of Plant Height and Tiller Number in Drought Tolerant Rice ( Oryza Sativa L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An 8 x 8 diallel cross of drought tolerant rice indicated significant differences among genotypes, parents, crosses, reciprocals and parents vs. crosses for the characters plant height and tiller number. Hayman's analysis suggested the importance of both additive and dominance gene actions. Regression coefficients between GCA and Yr indicated a close relation between the GCA effects and parental performances. A dual-purpose variety, Pukhi was found to be the best general combiner for plant height, while IR20 (a lowland variety) for tiller number. The best specific cross combination for plant height was Pukhi x BR21 and Mijingem x BR21 for tiller number. These varieties and crosses could be utilized in breeding drought tolerant rice for plant height and tiller number. The graphical analysis indicated that plant height was governed by partial dominance, while over dominance for tiller number. The concentrations of most dominant alleles were high in BR21 for plant height and in Jhumkamarang and Mijingem for tiller number but recessive alleles in Pukhi for plant height and BR21 for tiller number. In both the traits, higher h² (ns) values and insignificant E values indicated the absence of environmental effects and influence of additive gene effects in expressing the characters. Thus, the results suggested selecting progenies either at early or at later generations for both the traits to develop drought tolerant rice varieties.

Objectives:

1. To estimate the genetic behavior of plant height and tillering capacity in an 8 x 8 diallel cross.

2. To develop modern drought tolerant upland rice varieties.

Methodology:

Eight rice varieties viz. Marichboti, Patuakhali, Pukhi, Jhumkarnarang, Mijingem, BR21, OS4 and IR20 representing different agro-ecological conditions with variable degrees of draught tolerance were included in the study. A dial leI mating was made in all possible combinations at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during 1999 and 56 F_I hybrids were obtained. The pregerminated seeds of 64 entries (56 F_^ls and eight parents) were sown on the tap of 75 cm polyethylene tube filled with sand and sail (3 : 1). Twelve seeds from each entry were used and one seed was sawn an each tube. The tubes were arranged in a wooden frame in a triple lattice design. The plants were watered twice daily with cultural solution as suggested. Observations were recorded at maximum vegetative stage (35 days after seeding) an plant height (cm) and tiller number from each plant. The data were analyzed far variance combining ability, genetic components of variation and Vr - Wr graphs.

Achievement/Findings:

It is revealed from the graphical and component of variance analysis that dominance gene effect was prominent for the characters like plant height and tiller number. Therefore, it is concluded that hybrid breeding along with the conventional one would be prospective for drought tolerant rice breeding to bring out the desired improvement.
