Profit Ability and Inequality of Income from Fish Based Farming Systems in Some Areas of Mymensingh District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was designed to assess the relative profitability and factor share of income from fish based alternative farming systems in some areas of Mymensingh district. A two stage stratified random sampling technique was followed for conducting farm survey of selected 90 farms taking 30 from each of three farming systems during July to December 2004. Evidence showed that most of the selected farmers were engaged mainly in agriculture and their levels of education were above primary level. Majority of the farmers allocated their land under more than one farming systems and fish based farming systems were dominated by the larger farm size group. The per hectare net returns were found to be Tk. 63,707, Tk. 16, 105 and Tk. 3,611 respectively for alternate rice fish (A-R-F), rice-cum-fish (R- C-F) and only rice farm (O-R-F). The O-R-F farming system had the lowest profitability which induced the farmers for shifting their land from rice to fish farming. The income share of land and labor was found the highest in O-R-F, while the share of capital was almost similar in all the farming systems. The income inequality was relatively high for fish based farming systems than O-R-F system in the study areas. The study suggested for imposition of taxation at the fish based farming systems for income equality and equity point of view.

Objectives:

To examine whether the profitably of fish based farming system creates any income disparities in rural areas of Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Farm survey method was followed for this study. Fulpur and Haluaghat thanas of Mymensingh district were purposively selected for the collection of data. Many unions of Fulpur and Haluaghat thana were visited and finally" three" unions, namely Galagaon, Poyary and Dhara were selected for investigation. These unions were heavily engaged with A-R-F, R-C-F and O-R-F farming systems. Ninety (90) farmers were selected following a random sampling technique from three types of farming system that is, alternate rice fish (A-R-F), rice-cum-fish (R-C-F) and only rice farm (O-R-F). In rice-cum-fish farming system, rice and fish are produced in the same field and almost in the same period. Alternatively, rice fish farmers produce rice and fish in the same field but in two different seasons. Only rice farmers produced rice only in both seasons. To fulfill the objectives of the study a pre- designed survey schedule was prepared and tested in the field. Then the schedules were finally prepared for collection of data. Data were collected during July to December 2004. Farm business analytical techniques were used to analyze the data using mean and percentage.

Achievement/Findings:

The study showed that more than one farming systems were operational in each selected households. Fish based farming systems were newly developed. Average farm size was below one hectare. A-R-F and R-C-F system households earned higher profit per hectare. Income share of capital was the highest in the fish based farming systems. Income share of land was the highest in O-R-F. Though the relative share of income to labor was the highest in O-R-F, the absolute values were the highest in any fish based fanning system. The annual average income was the highest for A-R-F followed by R-C-F. The A-R-F and the R-C-F were less unequal than the O-R-F systems. The Directorate of Fisheries (DOF) should come forward to undertake a census of new area converting into low-lying inland pond fish farming as well as the areas where fish based cropping systems are existing for expanding the area and production of fishes in Bangladesh.
