Genetic Divergence Study in Guava (psidium Guaja Va L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The nature and magnitude of genetic diversity was estimated using D² and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for 11 characters in 24 genotypes of guava collected from different sources. The genotypes were grouped into four different clusters. Cluster I, II, III and IV composed of four, seven, three and ten genotypes in succession. The maximum inter-cluster distance was observed between clusters I and IV (10.128) and minimum between II and III (3.186). The highest intra-cluster distance was observed in cluster IV (2.027) while the lowest in cluster II (1.042). Based on inter-cluster distance and characters with high contribution of D² values the genotypes PG-001, PG-009 and PG-026 of cluster III may be considered for crossing with PG-002, PG-008, PG-013 and PG-014 of cluster I in succession.

Methodology:

Twenty four indigenous and exotic genotypes/varieties of guava grown at Germplasm Centre, Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh were chosen for this study. The study was done on 7 years old plants from November 2000 to September 2002. The experiment was laid out in a randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Three plants of each genotype constituted three replications. Irrigation along with other intercultural operations were done as per recommendation and essentiality. For analysis of divergence, data on 11 characters were identified as valueable ones. As per analysis of variance, all the characters showed significant differences among the genotypes indicating the presence of notable genetic variability and therefore, diversity analysis was carried out using GENSTAT 5 (copy right 1987, Lawes Agricultural Trust, Rothamsted Experimental Station). Mean data for each character were analyzed by MSTAT programme. Genetic diversity was studied following Mahalanobis (1936) generalized distance (D²) extended by Rao (1952). Clustering of genotypes was done according to Tocher's method (Rao, 1952).

Achievement/Findings:

The cross-involving parents belonging to the maximum divergence were expected to manifest maximum heterosis and also wide variability in genetic architecture. Saifullah et al. (1999) reported that genotypes belonging to the clusters with maximum inter-cluster distance are generally more diverged. Selection of parents for hybridization should be done from two clusters having wider inter-cluster distance to get more variability. For this reason, genotypes under cluster IV and I are best for hybridization. But none of the 11 characters had the highest or second highest mean performance under cluster IV. Therefore the genotypes PG-001, PG-009 and PG-026 of cluster III should be selected for crossing with PG-002, PG-008, PG-013 and PG-014 of cluster I. The progeny of those parents may be superior in number of fruits, fruit size, seed content, storability, yield and over all quality.
