Profitability and Yield Gaps of Pond Fish Culture Under Differet Types of Management

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study is concerned with profitability and yield gap of pond fish culture under three types of management. Cross section data from five villages of Netrokona Sadar Upazila and one village of Purbadhala Upazila of Netrokona District was collected. The sample of the study consists of 90 fish fanners comprising 30 from each of the individual owner farmers (JOFs), jointly owner fanners (JOFs) and Shabolambi Unnayan Shamity (SUS) managed farmers (SMFs). Tabular as well as statistical technique was applied to analyze results of the study. Findings showed that fish farming was very profitable than crop farming. It was found that the average annual per hectare fish production of IOFs, JOFs and SMFs were 4,665 kg, 2,409 kg and 6,147 kg respectively. Per hectare per year net return of IOFs, JOFs and SMFs were Tk 155754.00, Tk 61687.00 and Tk 226461.00 respectively. Benefit cost ratios were 3.01,2.05 and 3.80 for IOFs, JOFs and SMFs respectively. Feed and human labour had positive and significant impact on pond fish production for IOFs, JOFs and SMFs. Fingerlings had positive and significant impact on pond fish production for IOFs and SMFs. Lime had positive and significant impact on pond fish production for IOFs and JOFs. Fertilizer had positive and significant impact on pond fish production for SMFs. Yield gap was 1,527 kg/ha, which was 21 percent of the highest yield.

Objectives:

To study the profitability and yield gap of pond fish culture under three types of management.

Methodology:

Five villages of Netrokona sadar upazila and one village of Purbadhala upazila of Netrokona district were purposively selected for this study. The data were collected by interview method during July to December 2002. Farmers under three types of management were included taking 30 from each type of management. A total of 90 farmers were taken from individual owner farmers (IOFs), jointly owner farmers (JOFs) and SUS managed farmers (SMFs). The tabular and statistical analyses were used to present the findings of the study. To determine the effects of variable inputs on fish production, two types of production function were initially estimated. These are linear and Cobb-Douglas production functions. According to the best-fit, Cobb-Douglas production function was selected. Yield gaps were calculated by subtracting average yield from potential yield (the highest yield of each management).

Achievement/Findings:

The study gathered some valuable information regarding pond fish production, which will be helpful for fish farmers, entrepreneurs and policy makers of the country. Improving the production technology in existing ponds and considering the scarcity of land in this country, fish production should be increased through intensification, rather than increasing farm size or excavating new ponds. The policy makers may pay an immediate attention to this issue. Government and other agencies should play their assigned role by disseminating information to the farmers and arranging necessary training on scientific methods of pond fish farming. Such training will assist farmers to identify and solve problems related to pond fish farming. Necessary training and proper use of inputs will be helpful to reduce yield gaps. Evidence showed that SUS managed farmers were earning much more profit than the others. It is therefore, suggested that institutional credit and training facilities should be extended to the farmers who are interested in pond fish fanning. The results of the study indicate that the fish yield as well as income of the farmers can be increased substantially by modern fish culture in Bangladesh.
