Pond Culture of Climbing Perch (anabas Testudineus): Effects of Stocking Densities on Growth and Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of stocking densities on growth and production of climbing perch Anabas testudineus was investigated under four stocking densities namely, 6, 8, 10 and 12 fish/m², were tested for a period of 180 clays. A positive allometric growth of the fish was found and a significant linear relationship was recorded between condition factor (K) and both weight and length of fish under different stocking densities. The stocking density of 10 fish/m² (T₃) resulted in the highest production of fish (3312.55 ± 78 kg/ha)

Objectives:

To the effects of stocking densities on growth and survival of climbing perch, under pond culture.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted for a period of 180 days between May and November 2003 in a fish farm, Madina Fisheries Complex, Dohar, Dhaka, Bangladesh, located between 24 °5 'N and 90°5 'E. Eight shallow earthen ponds were used for the experiment. The experiment was designed in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 treatments, namely, T₁ (6 fish/m²), T₂ (8 fish/m²), T₃ (10 fish/m²), and T₄, (12 fish/m²), each with two replication. All eight experimental ponds were engaged for the purpose. After acclimatization the fingerlings were stocked treatment wise in different experimental ponds. Water temperature (portable centigrade thermometer, Model HI 8053, Hanna instruments, Manila, Philippines), dissolved oxygen (dissolved oxygen meter YSI model 158), pH (Orion 205A pH meter), and water transparency (secchi disc) were measured at sampling days. Likewise, total hardness and ammonia were measured by portable test kit (Hach Fish Farming kit FF-2, Hach Chemical Company Ltd., Loveland, California, USA). Sampling was done in every 15 days by a cast net. For sampling purpose, 30 fish from each pond were caught, weighed, and measured. Sampled fish was weighed to the nearest of 0.1 g in a tared water filled glass jar. Weight was taken by a sensitive electrical balance to the nearest of 0.1 g. Length measurement was made with a perplex measuring tray, having millimeter ruler. Length was taken from the tip of the maxilla to the longest caudal fin ray and was measured to the nearest to 0.1 cm. At the termination of the experiment, fishes were retrieved by draining the ponds. Survival rate was calculated as: Survival rate = Number of fish alive up to sampling day x 100/Total number of fish stocked. Specific growth rate (SGR) was calculated by using the formula: SGR = In W₂ - In W₁/T₂ - T₁/ x 100; Where, W₂ = Final live body weight (g), W₁ = Initial live body weight (g), T₂ - T₁ = Duration of the experiment (day). Condition factor (K) was calculated by the formula: K = 100 X W/L3, where W is body weight and L is total length of the fish. Length and weight relationship was estimated by using the allometric growth equation: W = aLb. The values of "a" and "b" were estimated, using the linear regression routine of the computer package, from the log transformed values of length (L) and weight (W). After transformation (percentage data were arsine transformed), relevant data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with the help of statistical software SPSS (version 7.5) on a computer. The sample means were separated by Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (Duncan, 1955).

Achievement/Findings:

The present study, 10 fish/m² may, based on the performance of survival and production, be suggested for pond culture of climbing perch. Moreover, in view of the biodiversity and aquaculture importance of A. testudineus, research on other biological and acquacultural aspects of the species may be undertaken for extension of the species in the farmer's level.
