Efect of Time of Operation and Defoliation Period of Scion on the Success and Subsequent Growth of Mango Grafts

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Gerrnplasm Centre. Fruit Tree Improvement Project, Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University. Mymensingh during the period from April to December, 2001 to study the effect of time of operation and defoliation period of scion on the success and subsequent growth of mango grafts. The experiment consisted of (i) live dates of grafting operation viz., 20 April, 20 May, 20 June, 20 July and 20 August, 2001 and (ii) live defoliation period of scion viz., 5, 10, 15, 20 days and 0 days (just before grafting) was conducted in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Different Time of operation and defoliation period of scion showed significant effect on days required to bud break, percent success of grafts, length of sprout, number of leaves per graft, length and breadth of the longest leaf. Bud break was the earliest in June operation (17 days) while the latest in the August (20 days). Scion defoliated 10 days before grafting took the minimum time (16 days) to bud break. Highest percentage of success (70%) and sprout length were obtained from scions defoliated 20 days before operation. In case of combined effect, June grafting with scions defoliated 10 days before grafting was found to be the best.

Objectives:

i) To identify the suitable time of grafting.

ii) To observed the proper time of defoliation for the best success in grafting.

Methodology:

The present study was carried out at the 'Germplasm Centre' of Fruit Tree Improvement Project (FTIP), Department of Horticulture, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from April to August 2001. The two-factor experiment consisted of (i) five dates of grafting operation viz., 20 April, 20 May, 20 June, 20 July and 20 August, 2001 and (ii) five period of scion defoliation, viz., 5, 10, 15, 20 days and defoliation just before grafting. The experiment was conducted in Factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Scion were taken form 4-5 years old Amrapalli mango plants and cleft grafting was done on one year old rootstocks. The grafts were maintained in good condition by watering, removal of polythene cap and sheet after sprouting, weeding, off shoot cutting. Spraying insecticides and fungicides was given as and when required. Data were collected on days required to bud break, percentage of success, number of leaves per graft, length of sprouts and length and breadth of the longest leaf. The recorded data were analyzed statistically using MSTAT computer package programme. The mean differences were performed by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest value was obtained from June grafting and the lowest was in August grafting on all the parameters exception to April incase of length of sprout. Scion defoliated 10 days before grafting took the minimum time to bud break as well as recorded with highest percentage of success and length of sprout. On the other hand lowest success and sprout length were obtained form scion defoliated 20 days before operation, but number of leaves per graft, length and breath of the longest leaf were found highest in case of scions defoliation 15 and 5 days before grafting, respectively. From the present study it may be suggested that June grafting can be done successfully with 10 days defoliated scions for better results.
