Environmental Awareness and Problem Confrontation of the Ffs Farmers in Practising Ipm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to determine and describe the environmental awareness and problem confrontation in Practicing IPM by the FFS farmers in different unions of Bancharampur upazila under Brahmanbaria district. The study also explored the relationships between the selected characteristics of the FFS farmers' and their overall environmental awareness as well as with their problem confrontation. The selected characteristics included are age, literacy, family size, farm size, annual income, contact with change agent. organizational participation, cosmopolite ness, knowledge about IPM, agricultural knowledge. Data were collected from a sample of randomly selected 120 FFS farmers out of a total population of 240 from 30 Farmers' Field School (FFS). The data were collected through personal contact by using interview schedule, which contained simple and direct questions, and some scales. Data were collected during the period from September 15 to October 30, 2001. Environmental awareness of the FFS farmers was measured through a scale containing 15 items related to awareness issue based on the IPM practices. In respect of environmental awareness, the findings revealed that the highest proportion (76.67 percent) of the respondents had medium to high awareness while only 23.33 percent of them had low awareness.

Objectives:

The data were collected through personal contact by using interview schedule, which contained simple and direct questions, and some scales. Data were collected during the period from September 15 to October 30, 2001. Environmental awareness of the FFS farmers was measured through a scale containing 15 items related to awareness issue based on the IPM practices.

Achievement/Findings:

The findings revealed that the highest proportion (76.67 percent) of the respondents had medium to high awareness while only 23.33 percent of them had low awareness .Again, problem confrontation of the respondents was measured through a scale containing 22 items related to problems confronted by the FFS farmers based on IPM practices. ln respect of problem confrontation, the findings highlighted that the maximum proportion (43.34percent) of respondents had high, 30.83 percent had medium while .25.83 percent had low problem confrontation in practicing IPMThe literacy and knowledge of the farmers about IPM and agricultural knowledge had significant positive correlation with their environmental awareness and a negative correlation with their problem confrontation in practicing IPM. The variable farm size had a significant negative correlation with their environmental awareness and significant positive correlation with their problem confrontation. Also annual income had a significant positive correlation with their problem confrontation in practicing IPM. Rest of the variables, namely, age, family size, contact with change agent, cosmopolite ness and organizational participation had no significant relationship with their environmental awareness and problem confrontation.
