Studies on the Yield and Storability of Sweet Potato as Influenced by Planting Method and Mulching

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation with four different planting methods (Flat method, top ridge method, side ridge method and flat planting with subsequent ear thing up) and four different mulching techniques (water hyacinth mulch, straw mulch, irrigation three times, neither mulch nor irrigation) were studied to find out their effects on the yield and storability of sweet potato. Planting vines at the side of ridge gave the highest tuber weight (530g/lplant), tuber length (13.04 cm) and tuber yield (27.16 t/ha). Water hyacinth mulch resulted good performance in respect of yield components including the highest tuber yield of 27.81 t/ha compared to other treatments. Weight loss and rotting of tubers during storage were not significantly influenced by planting methods but mulching influenced both the characters. At 60 days of storage, minimum weight loss (29.82%) and rotting (19.67%) were observed where neither mulch nor irrigation was provided, while maximum in irrigated treatments (35.09% and 26.31 %, respectively). In relation to interaction effects, side planting with subsequent water hyacinth mulch gave the highest tuber yield (32.73 t/ha).

Objectives:

To find out effects of planting methods and mulching on the production and storability of sweet potato.

Methodology:

The vine cuttings of white skinned local cultivar of sweet potato were used in the experiment. The present study was conducted at the Horticultural Farm, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December 1996 to May 1997. The soil of the experimental field was silty loam in texture. The experiment included two factors i. e., different planting methods (Flat method, top ridge method, side ridge method and flat planting with subsequent earthing up) and four different mulching techniques (water hyacinth mulch, straw mulch, irrigation three times, neither mulch nor irrigation). The experiment was laid out in RCBD and replicated three times comprising 16 treatment combinations. Unit plot size was 3 m x 1.8 m. The crop was planted on December 1, 1996 with spacing of 60 cm x 30 cm. Manures and fertilizers were applied @ Cowdung 10 tons, Urea 140 kg, Triple- Super phosphate 100 kg and Muriate of Potash 150 kg per hectare respectively. Water hyacinth and straw mulches were placed on the respective plots after 30 days of planting when vines were established uniformly. The thickness of the mulches was maintained 8-10 cm. In irrigated treatments, watering was done thrice at 30, 60 and 90 days after planting. Intercultural operations were done as and when needed. The tuberous roots were harvested on May 7, 1997 and cured them by keeping spread in ordinary room at ambient I temperature (25 ±5°C) and humidity (85 ± 5%). Properly cured tuberous roots were stored in an ordinary room at an ambient temperature (25± 5°C). The recorded data were statistically analyzed and treatment effects were evaluated using DMRT.
