A Comparative Performance of Sesame Genotypes Grown in High Ganges Floodplain of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Shyampur, BARI, Rajshahi on the performance of 24 genotypes of sesame revealed wide variation among the genotypes in respect of vegetative growth and yield. The highest yield was obtained from the genotypes Pabna-77 and Rajshahi-98 (1.87 t/ha) which was followed by Joydebpur-112 (1.81 t/ha), Joydebpur-114 (1.80 t/ha). The highest yield obtained in this trial was due to higher primary branches/plant, pod length, no. of pods/plant and no. of seeds/pod. Thousand-seed weight was also the highest in Pabna-77. Noakhali-76 gave the lowest yield (0.41 t/ha). The shortest period for 100% flowering was taken by Joydebpur-109 (51 days) with appreciable yield (1.38 t/ha); whereas, Rajshahi-99, the latest 100% flowering cultivar (60 days) gave low yield (0.66 t/ha) with the least number of primary branches/plant (3.60).

Objectives:

To evaluate their performance in respect of morphological characters and genetic potentialities of yield component.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, BAR!, Shyampur, Rajshahi during February to May 1998. The soil was silty loam belonging to the agro-ecological zone of High Ganges River Flood plain. The number of genotypes were 24 including one check variety T-6. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with four replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. Sesame seeds at the rate of 8 kg/ha were sown on 18^th March 1998. In each replication, the seeds of each genotypes were continuously sown in rows 30cm apart and 5cm plant to plant distance was maintained. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 80 : 65 : 60 : 20 kg/ha of N, P₂O₅, K₂O and S through urea, triple super-phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum respectively (Annon, 1997). Fifty percent N and all other fertilizers were given at the time of final land preparation. The remaining 1/2 N were given as top dressing on 25^th days after sowing (DAS). Proper inter-cultural operations were done to maintain good crop growth. Ten plants of each genotypes were selected at random from each plot to record observations. Grain yield was adjusted at 13% moisture content. Crop growth rate (CGR) and relative growth rate (RGR) were calculated by using the following standard formulae (Radford, 1967). The data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were tested by least significant differences (Steel and Torrie, 1960).

Achievement/Findings:

From the results of this investigation, it may be concluded that the genotypes, namely Pabna-77, Rajshahi-98. Joydebpur-112, Joydebpur-114 and Rajshahi-89 would be needed for highest yield of sesame genotypes under rainfed condition in High Ganges Flood plain Soil around Rajshahi area. Thus it bears prospect for development as a future variety.
