Wood Anatomy and Extractive Content of Four Traditionally Used Wood Species of Bandarban Hill District in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this paper the anatomical properties and extractive content of four traditionally used wood species, viz itchri (Anogesus acuminate Wall), kochoi (Bridelia retusa Spreng), sil-bhadi (Garuga pinnata Roxb) and goda (vitex peduncularlis wall), of Bandarban Hill District in Bangladesh have been studied. All the wood species under the study have tyloses with narrow lumens. The extractive content of the sapwood of the species varies from 4.16 to 6.89 percent in cold water. The highest percentage was in itchri (6.89%) followed by goda (6.65%) and 5.9% in kochoi and lowest in sil-bhadi.the hot water extractive content varies from 6.88 to 8.76 percent with highest percent in itchri (8.76) followed by sil-bhadi(8.08), goda (8.02)and 6.88 in kochoi. The heartwood extractives in cold water were 7.21% in goda followed by 7.12,6.43 and 6.15% in itchri kochoi and sil-bhadi respectively. The hot water extractive content was higher in itchri(9.84%), followed by 8.97% in sil-bhandi, 8.7%^ in goda and 7.75% in kochoi. Both anatomical properties and extractives contents are the key determinate for the long durability of these species.

Objectives:

To validate the trditional knowledge on the understand the relationships of anatomical properties and percentage of extractives of these species with the durability.

Methodology:

Collected the authentic wood samples of these species from natural forests of Bandarban and determined gross features of these woods with naked eye and hand lens. And studied minute anatomical features from the permanent slides and macerated slides under the compound microscope. Terminology of International Association for Wood Anatomist (IAWA 1999) was used to describe the gross and minute anatomical features of wood. Fiber and vessel length of each species were measured from sapwood, heartwood and near pith. Forty samples per position were measured to represent 10% population mean. Tukey's pairwise comparison was used to compare the difference between two positions. The water solubility (extractives) of wood in cold and hot water was determined according to ASTM (1971) standard method. The percentage of matter soluble in cold and hot water, were calculated using the formula: = [(Wl - W2) / W1] x 100. Where, W1= weight of moisture free specimen used, and W2 = weight of dried specimen after extraction with cold water or hot water.
