Fertilizer Management on Growth and Yield of a Newly Developed Genotype of Garden Pea (pisum Satlvum L.) in Clay Loam Soil of Madhupur Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted on clay terrace soils of Madhupur Tract to study the response of fourteen treatment combinations of different fertilizers on plant characters, yield, crude protein content and nutrient uptake of garden pea. The highest yield of green pod (13.12 t ha^-1) and matured seed (2.27 t ha^-1) was obtained with the application of N₆₀+(P₂0₅) ₇₅+(K₂0)₆₀ kg ha^-1. The maximum plant height (94.44cm), maximum number of branches per plant (3.02), maximum number of pods per plant (8.07) and highest protein content (24.39%) increased with N₉₀+(P₂O₅)₇₅+(K₂O)60 kg ha^-1, conversely, application of these nutrients gave 4.5% and 19.3% lower yield of green and matured seed respectively over the highest yield obtained. N addition markedly contributed to increase the crude protein production as compared to P and K applications. The maximum total uptake of N, P and K were 123.62,4.78 and 69.03 kg ha^-1, respectively and was in the order of N>K>P.

Objectives:

To determine the optimum dose of nutrients for obtaining sustainable yield of a new genotype of pea.

Methodology:

Soil pH was determined by glass electrode pH meter in soil suspension having soil: w.ater ratio of 1 :2.5. Organic carbon was determined by wet combustion method. Total phosphorus content of soil and plant samples were determined by perchloric acid digestion assay using perchloric acid. (HCI0₄) and nitric acid (HN0₃) by double beam spectrophotometer I. For available phosphorus of soil extracted by 0.5 M NaHC0₃ (pH 2.5) and determined colorimetrically using molybdate blue method. Total potassium content of soil and plant samples were determined by perchloric acid digestion assay method and was measured by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The dimension of each plot was 2.8 m x 2.0 m having a plot to plot and block to block spacing of 0.75 m and 1.0 m, respectively. An advanced line of pea (Local white) was used as a test crop in the experiment. A common dose of 20, 1, 1, and l kg ha^-1 each of S, Zn, Mo and B were applied for all treatments, respectively. Full amount of P as TSP, K as MP, S as gypsum Zn as zinc oxide, Mo as ammonium molybdate, B as borax, cowdung and half of N as urea were applied during land preparation. The remaining quantity of was top-dressed at pre-flowering stage. The recommended packages of practices were done during the growing period of the crop. Data on different parameters were taken during the study. Pods were harvested at two different stages of the maturity. The first pod harvest was done at green seed stage from half portion of the plot and the remaining half were kept to allow the pods to get maturity. The crude protein has been estimated by multiplying the % N (determined) with a factor 6.25. Seeds were treated with Rhizobial inoculants before sowing as per the treatment. The mixture of three strain, BINA-MO-634, BINA-MO-L3 and. BlNA-MA-L3 were used as a source of inoculum.
