Interest of the Landless Rural Youth in Income Earning Vegetable Cultivation in Two Selected Villages Under Mymensingh Sadar Upazila

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of this study was to determine i) the interest of the landless rural youth in selected income earning vegetable cultivation, ii) their problem confrontation in the cultivation of income earning vegetables and iii) their twelve selected characteristics namely, age, education, experience in crop farming, agricultural knowledge, family size of the landless rural youth/parents, family education, organizational participation, income of the landless rural youth/parents, participation in existing activities, farm size of parents/landless rural youth, ability to cope with uncertainty and attitude towards new technology. Interest and problem confrontation constituted dependent variables whereas twelve selected characteristics constituted independent variables of this study. Data were collected with the help of interview schedule from I00 landless rural youth living in 305 landless rural youth families of two selected BAUEC villages namely, Bhabakhali and Daribhabakhali, during the period from 6th September to 28'h September, 200 I . Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the concerned variables. Basic statistics like mean. standard deviation, range. and percentage were used to interpret the data. Interest lndex (II ) and Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) were computed to determine the comparative interest and problem confrontation respectively.

Objectives:

l) To determine and describe the interest of the landless rural youth in selected income earning vegetable cultivation.

2) To determine and describe the extent of problem confrontation by the landless rural youth in cultivation of income earning vegetables.

3) To determine and describe the selected personal, social, economic and psychological characteristics of the landless rural youth belonging to the landless families.

Methodology:

A carefully designed interview schedule was used in collecting data to determine i) the interest of the landless rural youth in selected income earning vegetable cultivation ii) their problem confrontation in the cultivation of income earning vegetables and iii) the twelve selected characteristics of the landless rural youth. The draft interview schedule was prepared in Bengali in accordance with the objectives of the study. The interview schedule was pretested on the 10 landless rural youth selected at random from the study area during August 2001 . Necessary corrections, additions and modifications were made in the interview schedule based on the pretest results. The modified and corrected interview schedule was then printed informal form To collect data from the respondents, house to house survey was conducted by the researcher. All possible efforts were made to explain the purpose of the study to the respondents in order to get valid and pertinent information from them. Interviews were conducted with the respondents in their houses during their ensured period. While starting interview with any respondent, the researcher took all possible care to establish rapport with them, so that he did not feel hesitant or hostile to provide responses to the questions and statements in the schedule. Whenever, any respondent felt difficultly in understanding questions, the researcher took utmost care to explain and classify them properly.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the landless rural youth are around 21 to 25 years of age (42 percent ) with illiteracy dominating among them (52 percent illiterate). More than one-third (39 percent) youth had medium crop farming experience, majority of them had either low or medium agricultural knowledge ( low 46 percent and medium 48 percent) and they mostly (53 percent) belonged to a medium family of 5 to 8 members. Large majority of the landless rural youth's family education (no education 48 percent) was poor and had little organizational participation (no participation 65 percent). Over two-fifths of the youth/parents (44 percent) had low income, large majority of them (65 percent) had medium participation in existing activities while significant proportion (44 percent) had small farm size. Ability of the most youth (63 percent ) to cope with uncertainty was poor and about one-half(47 percent) of them had low attitude towards new technology.Out of twenty four possible correlations, twenty were statistically significant. Among the independent variables, only age and family size bad no relationships with both the dependent variables, while the other ten independent variables had significant negative relationships with both the dependent variables.
