Performance of six groundnut genotypes was evaluated at three soil series of different agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh as influenced by Bradyrhizobium inoculation for nodulation, dry matter production and yield. Inoculation significantly improved nodulation, dry matter production and yield. The magnitude of the response was different in different soils. Total nodule (149%) and dry matter (69%) production at 120 DAP and pod yield (50%) increase were the highest at Jamalpur, whereas, dry weight of nodule was the highest (146%) at Mymensingh and hay yield (81%) was the highest at Rajshahi. Considerable variations amongst the genotypes were also observed with almost all the parameters studied. The genotype 62-30 maintained superiority over the other genotypes and was found to be statistically better than the mother variety, Dacca-I in most cases.

To nodulate and produce an effective symbiosis in a given environmental situation.

The soil at Rajshahi was a High Ganges River Floodplain (Sara series) with pH 7.8 (in water), organic carbon 0.49%, total N 0.05% and Olsen's P 7 ppm. The soil at Mymensingh was an Old Brahmaputra Floodplain (Sonatala series) with pH 6.8 (in water), organic C 0.68%, total N 0.05% and Olsen's P 10.5 ppm. The soil at Jamalpur was & Non-Calcareous Dark Grey Floodplain (Kendua series) with pH 6.3, organic C 0.67%, total N 0.06% and Olsen's P 7.8 ppm. Five genotypes of groundnut (43-17, 62-30, 86-54, 64-82 and 16-90) developed at the institute through gamma-irradiation technique were investigated along with the mother variety, Dacca-1 in each experiment. The genotypes were selected on the basis of extensive field trials conducted during the last several years from a screened lot of 25 advanced lines. Seeds of groundnut were treated with peat based Bradyrhizobium inoculant BINA-GN-2 (30 gm kg-I seed) which consisted of two locally isolated strains G-24 and G-26. Sugarcane molasses (35 gm kg-I seed) was used as sticking agent. The Bradyrhizobium strains were grown separately in yeast extract mannitol broth (Vincent, 1970) to a concentration of about 109 cells ml I broth. Mixed culture inoculant was prepared by mixing equal quantity of 6-day old culture grown at 28±10C in a rotary shaker. Phosphorus (27 kg ha-I as triple super phosphate) and potassium (35 kg ha-I as muriate of potash) were applied to all the three fields of Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Jamalpur as basal dose at the time of land preparation. Experiments were laid out in a split plot design with varieties in the main blocks and inoculation treatments in the subplots. The unit plot size was 3m x 5m. The treatments were replicated three times. The data on nodulation number and dry weight of nodules and dry weight of whole plant were recorded at 120 days of plant growth. The yield (air dried pod and stover) was recorded at the time of plant maturity (180 days of growth). The plant material was dried in-an oven at 65±10C. Analysis of variance was performed on the data and means were classified according to Duncan's Multiple Range Test (P<0.05), within each soil type.

The results obtained in the study that the nodulation, dry matter production and yield were significantly enhanced by Bradyrhizobium inoculation in all the three soils of the country. Although the uninoculated plants were also profusely nodulated, the significant response of introduced inocula indicated that the indigenous bradyrhizobia were not sufficient enough to permit optimum nodulation and nitrogen fixation Similar enhancement of nodulation due to inoculation were also reported by many researchers and Danso.
