A field experiment was conducted for 4 years on patipata to find out the relationship between planting spacing and yield potential. Three different propagules viz. rhizome, branch cutting and rooted branch cutting were used as propagating prologules. Production of average number of harvestable culms ranged from 506 to 560 plot-1 of 18 m2 area maintained in five different spacing on a four year harvesting cycle. No significant relationship was obtained among spacing. On the contrary significant difference was obtained on yield from planting propagules viz rhizome, branch cutting and rooted cutting. Culms yield were maximum for rhizome compare to branch cutting and rooted cutting. Maximum number of harvested culms was 1,89,284/ha for rhizome and 1,71,750/ha for branch cutting at a spacing of 90 cm x 90 cm. the finding reveal that branch cutting is an inexpensive and promising method compared to other propagating propagules for traditional pati-pata plantation in Bangladesh.

  1.  To assess the effect of planting space and three propagating propagules on the yield potential of culms for a harvesting cycle of four years.

Two experiments were established following Complete Randomized Design (CRD) at Bangladesh Forest Research Institute campus. The experiments were established in May 1999 and continued till June 2003 with a harvesting cycle of four years. Rhizome used only for spacing trial (A) and three different sources of planting propagules, viz. rhizome, branch cuttings and rooted branch cuttings were used for propagules trial (B). The experiment site was divided into two separate plots, A and B. Plot-A was divided into 15 equal sub plot of 18 m2 (3 m x 6 m) and plot-B was divided into 9 equal sub-plots of 30 m2(5 m x 6 m) with a margin of 50 em wide on all sides of each sub-plot. The site remained inundated at a depth of about 30 cm for about six months during June to November. The plots were provided with partial shade (25-30%) from surrounding trees. Weeding and nursing were applied twice a year before and after the monsoon. Fifteen sub-plots of plot-A were grouped into 3 replications consisting of 5 sub-plots designated considering as Treatments T1 (45 cm x 45 cm), T2 (60 cm x 60 cm), T3 (75 em x 75 cm), T4 (90 cm x 90 cm) and T5 (105 cm x 105 cm) respectively. Rhizome propagules of uniform size and age were used in the experiment with five different planting spacing at random. The sub-plots (15) were earmarked permanently for identification and collection of data throughout the experiment. Total number of propagules in each replication was 84, 45, 32, 24 and 18 for T1 T2, T3, T4 and T5 , respectively with a grand total of 609 propagules used in this experiment. Mature shoots were harvested in 2003 at the age of 4. Average dominant height (m) of each clump, diameter (mm) above 50 cm from ground, green weight (kg) of each culm and number of usable culms plot-1 were assessed after harvesting the crop. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the measured parameters was done to evaluate the effect of spacing and planting propagules on height, diameter, number of culms and their green weight.

1.  Government Budget:

Planting spacing from 45 cm x 45 cm to 105 cm x 105 cm had an insignificant impact on the yield of pati-pata. Expenditure for raising pati-pata is higher at closer spacing by rhizome. So, a wider spacing such as 105 cm x 105 cm is preferable than other close spacing used in the experiment. Rhizome at traditional spacing (90 cm x 90 cm) did have produced higher yield than branch cutting. But, branch cutting being inexpensive and can also be extensively used as propagating material. Cost and benefit need to be considered for determining optimal spacing and economic use of propagating material. Raising plantation using rooted branch cutting was not feasible. Small scale trial experiments in different locations may be carried out in different pati-pata growing areas of Bangladesh to assess the findings of present research for future extension programme.
