Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Thirty-eight genotypes of bread wheat were studied for relationships between yield and yield contributing characters and selection indices and their relative efficiencies in improvement of grain yield. In general, genotypic correlation coefficients were higher than their corresponding phenotypic ones. The characters, number of spikes/plant, number of grains/spike, harvest index showed significant positive correlations with grain yield/plant. Path coefficient analysis suggested that number of spikes/plant contributed maximum to grain yield through its positive direct effect. Number of grains/spike, 100-grain weight and harvest index had also positive direct effects on grain yield/plant. Discriminant function analysis revealed that a progressive increase in the efficiency of selection was observed with the inclusion of additional character in the index. Among the single variable indices, number of grains/spike showed maximum relative efficiency over the straight selection for grain yield/plant. The highest relative efficiency was observed with index involving six characters, number of spikes/plant + number of spikelets/spike + number of grains/spike + 100-grain weight + grain yield/plant + harvest index. However, some of 2-variable, 3-variable, 4-variable and 5-variable indices were also equally good. So, in the present investigation, the index involving six characters such as number of spikes/plant, number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike, 100-grain weight, harvest index and grain yield/plant were effective and efficient for selection of bread wheat.

Objectives:

To studying the relationship between yield and yield contributing characters the selection indices and their relative efficiencies in improvement of grain yield in bread wheat.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Thirty-eight bread wheat genotypes (varieties/lines) were used for the present study. Data were recorded on the number of spikes/plant, length of spike (cm), number of spikelets/spike, number of grains/spike, grain weight (g), days to maturity, harvest index (%) and grain yield/plant (g). Genotypic and phenotypic correlation coefficients for different characters in all possible combinations were calculated using formula given by Miller et al. (1958). Path coefficient analysis was performed according to the procedure suggested by Dewy and Lu (1959). Selection indices were constructed using the methods developed based on the discriminant function of Fisher (1936). Selection indices and their relative efficiencies in terms of expected genetic advance in yield were calculated according to the method stated.

The index based on number of spiked/plant + number of spikelets/ spike + number of grains/spike + 100-grain weight + grain yield/plant + harvest index is efficient in discriminating the genetically superior or inferior populations and could be utilized with confidence in the selection programme for bread wheat.
