Studies on the Performance of M₃ Mutants for Quantitative Characters and Estimates of Genetic Parameters, Correlation and Path Coefficients in Sunflower

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Several early maturing mutants with shorter plant height, thicker stem, larger heads and higher number of seeds/head were obtained in the segregating population of M₃ generation. The selected mutants had also minimum sterile seeds in the head compared to the mother variety Kironi. Increased 100-seed weight was also found in the segregating population. Seed yield/plant ranged from 46.0 gm to 71.6 gm. Kironi gave only 52 gm seed/plant. The results showed variation between phenotypic and genotypic coefficients for all the characters. Maximum genotypic coefficient of variation was found in sterile seeds/head followed by number of seeds/head, 100-seed weight and seed yield/plant. Heritability was substantially higher for all the characters. Additive gene effect was found in sterile seeds/head, number of seeds/head, 100-seed weight and seed yield/plant. Further, correlation studies showed that head diameter, number of seeds/head and 100-seed weight had significant positive association with seed yield. These three characters had direct effect on seed yield. Finally, 12 mutants were selected on the basis of higher seed yield/plant, shorter plant height and other desirable characters.

Objectives:

To discuss the performance of the selected M₃mutants in the segregating population for different quantitative characters and studies of correlation coefficients and path analysis in sunflower.

Methodology:

Seeds of a local sunflower variety Kironi were irradiated with different doses of gamma rays and M₁ was grown in the field of Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture, Mymensingh. At harvest, seeds of different doses were collected and grown in, plant progeny rows in M₂ generation in the next cropping season. Selection was made in this generation. As a result, 28 mutant lines were selected from this generation. All these mutant lines and the local variety Kironi were sown in randomized complete block design with three replications on 14 November, 1999 in M₃ generation. Unit plot size was 3m X 3m with 50 cm distance between rows and plants. One weeding was done after 25 days of sowing. One irrigation was given to the crop at flowering considering insufficient soil moisture of the experimental plot. Recommended cultural practices were followed during the entire crop- growing period. Data on various quantitative characters were taken from 10 randomly selected plants of each plot. Mean values were used for statistical analysis., Components of variation and genetic parameters were estimated following the method as suggested by Burton (1952) while correlation and path coefficients were determined according to the formulae of Miller et al. (1958).
