Knowledge of Growers on Mango Cultivation: a Farm Level Stydy

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main objectives of this study were to determine i) the extent of knowledge on mango cultivation, ii) the extent of use of varieties of mangos iii) the relationships of each of the selected characteristics of the mango growers with their knowledge regarding mango cultivation and iv) the problems faced by the growers in cultivating mangos. The study was conducted in Sadar upazilla of Nawabganj district and the mango growers of this upazilla were the population. A sample of 100 mango growers was selected randomly from 12 villages of the upazilla. Data were collected from the sample during 10 August through 19 September 2001. The findings revealed that plantation of new mango varieties are almost lacking. Nearly four out of five of the mango growers (79 percent) had "very good" knowledge while twelve percent had "excellent" knowledge and only nine percent had "good" knowledge on mango cultivation. Education, family income, cosmopolite ness, extension contact and organizational participation of the mango growers had significant positive relationships with their knowledge on mango cultivation and age was negatively significant. The main problem faced by the mango growers was stagnation of water in the mango orchard due to flash flood.

Objectives:

1. To determine the extent of knowledge on mango cultivation of the growers;

2. To identify the varieties used by the mango growers;

3. To explore the relationship between each of the selected characteristics of the mango growers and their knowledge on mango cultivation; and

4. To identify the problems faced by the mango growers.

Methodology:

The researchers themselves collected the data through personal interview using the interview schedule having both open- and close-ended questions. A personal rapport development was made through door to door visit. The entire process of collecting data took place during 10 August through 19 September 2001. Appropriate scales were developed to operationalize some of the characteristics of the mango growers. The statistical measures, such as range, mean, standard deviation, percent were used to describe both the independent and dependent variables. Pearson's Product Moment Co-efficient of Correlation was used to find out the relationship of selected characteristics of the mango growers with their knowledge on mango cultivation. Five-percent (0.05) level of probability was used as the basis for rejection of null hypothesis.In the present investigation, knowledge denotes the growers' understanding of the different mango cultivation practices. For measuring the extent of knowledge, an overall knowledge index (OKI) was calculated. To do the same, 17 questions on five recommended package of mango cultivation practices i.e. planting methods, fertilizers management, pesticides management, water management, and fruiting harvesting & storage were prepared and growers were asked about these practices one by one. Altogether 30 marks were distributed unevenly to the 17 selected questions. Each question item of the knowledge test was measured using a scale of 'correct', 'partial correct' and 'wrong' responses. Every correct response received a score of full mark assigned while partial correct response received partial marks and the wrong response received zero. At first, growers' knowledge was analyzed to a particular recommended practice of mango production.
