Impact of BARC Credit Program on Income Generation of Rural Women

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The aim of the study was to determine the extent of women's participation in income generation and activities financed by BRAC micro credit programmes. Primary data were gathered from four villages namely Dakshin Salna, Kathora, Dighirchala and Sharipur under Gazipur sadar thana of Gazipur district. The study indicated that the women use small loans in diversified activities from which they got low return and the average net return was lower than their male counterparts. However, they had adequate potentiality to take part in activities that male do. The results of the study revealed that freedom in decision making matters of the family was likely to be higher for rural women involved with public or private development agencies. The findings also indicated that though there were some factors affected on repayment of credit, the percentage of repayment was quite satisfactory after that there were some factors like low income affected on repayment of credit negatively.

Objectives:

To determine the extent of women's participation In their Income generations as well as in decision making activities.
To evaluate the credit programmes for the rural women in the study area.

Methodology:

Four villages namely Dakshin Salana, Kathora, Dighirchala and Sharifpur under Gazipur sadar thana of Gazipur district were selected for the study. After selection of the study area, a list of current beneficiaries (1999-2000) was collected from the BRAC branch office situated at Chandana. Total sample size of the study was 75 (Seventy five). Random sampling technique was followed to select the respondents in this study. The period of the study was 2000-2001. Tabular as well as . statistical analysis was used to classify the collected data and to derive relevant finc4.ngs. To assess the level of participation of rural women in farm, non-farm and household decision-making process, the participation index was used.

Achievement/Findings:

A significant proportion of BRAC credit was utilized in meeting productive expenses which playing a significant role in income generation of their family. Rural women do have adequate potential in the sense that they were able to participate in any activity within and outside that men do by using credit. The credit programmes raised rural women's income that helped them to lift them above the poverty line. However, their net return was much lower than their male counterparts. Provision of credit was an important element for involving the rural women in income generating and development activities. The participation of rural women in credit programme was helpful for the socio-economic development of the country in general and the family in particular for poverty alleviation. Freedom in decision- making matters of the family was likely to be higher for rural women due to involvement in various income generating activities through credit. Hope to get credit in future, proper supervision by BRAC staffs as well as pressure by group members and official stuffs were the main factors affecting timely repayment of credit.
