Attitude of Farmers Towards the Use of Urea Super Granule on Rice Cultivation in Abbaynagar Upazila Under Jessore District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Abhaynagar Upazila of Jessore district. Forty percent of farmers were randomly selected from a population of 258 farmers to make a total sample size of 104 farmers. Data were collected from the sample by an interview schedule during August 05 to September 20, 2000. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was used to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their attitude towards the use of USG. The regression coefficients were also computed to determine the effect of the selected characteristics of farmers on their attitude towards the use of USG. The majority of the farmers (59.62 percent) had moderately favourable attitude towards the use of USG while 25.00 percent had slightly favourable attitude and 15.38 per cent had highly favourable attitude towards the use of USG. Academic qualification, farm size, family income, cosmopolitencss, extension media contact, organizational participation, agricultural training experience, innovativeness and agricultural knowledge of the farmers were found to have positive significant relationship with their attitude' towards the use of USG. However, extension media contact and agricultural knowledge of the farmer had positive and significant effect on their attitude towards the use of USG while the rest of the variables did not show any significant effect on their attitude towards the use of USG the top three important problems according to rank of order as faced by the farmers in using were i) "it is more time consuming and more laborious to use", ii) lack of adequate training of farmers" and iii) "farmers' ignorance about the use of USG. The most important three solutions of the problems suggested by the farmers were i) Block Supervisors should go to villages and provide the farmers practical information and training related to use of USG" ii) "the activities of the Block Supervisor should be enhanced in this regard" and iii) "USG should be distributed by appointing fertilizer dealers".

Achievement/Findings:

The majority farmers of the study area were young and age of the farmers had no significant influence on their attitude towards the use of USG. The findings revealed that cosmopoliteness of the farmers had significant positive relation with their attitude towards the use of USG and most of the farmers were low and medium cosmopoliteness. Extension media contact of the farmers showed significant positive relationship with their attitude towards the use of USG and also significant effect on concerned variables. Agricultural training experience of the farmers could play the most important role for increasing their knowledge and skills regarding the use of USG and farming favourable attitude towards the use of USG.
