Monogenean Ectoparasites of Walla Go Attu (bloch & Schneider) in Freshwater of Mymensingh, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Parasitological examination of the gills of Wallago attu from different waterbodies of Mymensingh during 1999-2000 revealed that the host fish was parasitized by eight species of monogenetic trematodes viz., Ancylodiscoides in dicus, Silurodiscoides gussevi, S. octotylus, Mizelleus indicus, M. wallagonius, Sprostonia wallagonia, Thaparocleidus kao and Hamatopeduncularia lucknowensis. Descriptions and drawings of the hardparts of these parasites are provided, and all these parasites are described in detail as an uninvestigated group of parasites from Bangladesh waters.

Objectives:

To desceibes eight species of monogeneans from gill filaments of Wallago attu.

Methodology:

Host fish Wallago attu was purchased live or occasionally freshly dead from Brahmaputra river at Shambhuganj, Sutiakhali, Mymensingh and local fish markets (fish are supplied from catches of beels and haors). All together 45 fish sample were examined. They were brought to the laboratory, gill arches were removed and placed in petri dishes with water. Each gill was separated and gently scrapped to separate the monogeneans. Then the flukes were collected by the help of a fine pipette under a dissecting microscope on a glass slide with a drop of water. The flukes were then covered with a coverslip. The comer of the coverslip were fixed with sialant to prevent from moving and a drop of ammonium picrate was introduced to fix and clear the monogeneans. Monogeneans were also observed alive whenever possible. Drawings were made with the help of a Camera lucida. Measurements and terminology used after Gussev (1976). Measurements of parasites are presented as ranges of minimum-maximum and shown in millimeters.
