The age levels of respondents ranged from 19 to 50 years with an average of 33. Nearly 90 percent of them were of either young or middle aged. The average number of schooling was nearly 3 years and about one- half (52 percent) of respondents could sign only. The average number of members in the family was 6. More than fifty percent respondents ' family size was of medium which is 5 to 7 members. The average farm size of the respondents was 0.71 ha. Majority (85 percent) were marginal (up to l.5 ha) farmers. Average annual income was nearly TK. 57,000 and nearly 60 percent of them belonged medium income group (Tk. 31,000 to Tk. 74,000 in a year). Sixty five percent respondents had medium participation, 20 percent had high participation and only 15 percent had low participation in rice post harvest activities. While participating in rice post harvest activities, 53 percent respondents felt medium training needs compared to 29 percent and 18 percent, who felt low and high training needs respectively. The major four problems according to rank order as faced by the respondents during the post harvest activities were; i) high price of threshing machine, ii) lack of proper market price, iii) lack of time to nurse children and other members of the family and iv) damage of a portion of rice by poultry, cattle and also theft during the time of drying. From the overall input and technological needs it was observed that 26 percent respondents had low need, 55 percent had medium need and only 17 percent had high need of the selected inputs and technologies. The variables like family size, farm size, annual income, rice production and family co operation of the respondents had negatively significant relationships with their extent of participation . Farm size, annual income, rice production and agricultural knowledge of the respondents had positively significant relationships with their training needs and problem confrontation in rice post harvest activities. Whereas, fatalism had negatively significant relationship with training needs of the respondents. The regression results show that among the significant variables only rice production had negative association with extent of participation and positive association with training needs and problem confrontation.

  Performance

(i) identify the nature and extent of participation of women in rice post harvest activities, (ii) determine the training needs of women in rice post harvest activities in order to improve their knowledge and skills in rice production system, (iii) identify the problems faced by the women during their participation in rice post harvest activities and their probable solutions, (iv) assess the relationship between the women 's extent of participation, training needs and problem confrontation in rice post harvest activities with their selected characteristics, and (v) identify the inputs and technologies needs of women to enhance their participation  in rice post harvest activities.

Two unions were randomly selected out of eight from the Poverty Elimination Through Rice Research Assistance (PETRRA) Project area of Kaligonj  upazila of Lalmonirhat district. One hundred and ten women-members were selected through stratified random sampling method Data were collected by using an interview schedule during August 28 to September 24, 2000. Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Co efficient (r) was used to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the respondents and dependent variables. Regression analyzes were also used to analyze the extent of contribution made by the significantly related variables.

1.  The literacy rate of the women in the study area was very low, more than half of them could sign only. The average family size of the women was closely near to the national average. Even being a NGO member, family make-up decision was not influenced by the NGO activities. On the other hand, most of the women had small operations with a tendency of low annual income. 2.Housewives with small family, marginal farm size, low level of education, low rice production and low annual income seem to have great extent of participation in rice post harvest activities. 3. The housewives with higher rice production need to spend more time in managerial activities of the family. 4. The housewives with more available family co-operation usually get some relief from the participation in rice post harvest activities. 5. The respondents with small farm size rather than marginal farm size, higher rice production, higher annual income, higher agricultural knowledge and low fatalism need more training to face their problems and maintain their sustainable production and income. Women with large operations, consequently more production of rice and more annual income, confronted more problems in rice post harvest activities. 7. The respondents with higher agricultural knowledge understood their problem easily.
