Job Performance and Job Satisfaction of the Female Block Supervisors Under Dhaka and Mymensingh Agricultural Regions

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Dhaka and Mymensingh agricultural regions of DAE. Data were obtained from 106 (67 percent of the population) randomly selected from the Female Block Supervisors of the two agricultural regions. Two different questionnaires - one for the Female Block Supervisors and the other for their respective supervisors were used as the instruments for data collection. The whole process of data collection took 67 days from 07 May to 13 July 2000. The highest performing job responsibilities of the Female Block Supervisors were "attending all Upazila meetings, and training days", "completing a SEMS Form-1 for each face to face extension activity conducted", and "maintaining a daily diary' of activties" out of 17 job responsibilities. The lowest performing job responsibilities of the Female Block Supervisors were "conducting special Surveys in case of natural haz.ards or emergencies", "undertaking all important task of public interest as instructed by the government", and "undertaking any other duties that UAO may determine".In terms of overall job performance, about half (49 percent) of the Female Block Supervisor had low job performance while 43 and 8 percent of them had medium and high performance, respectively. The Female Block Supervisors were highly satisfied regarding their leave facility", "place of posting facility", and "input supply for demonstration" and highly dissatisfied with their "promotion facility", "residential accommodation facility", and "travel and transport facility". Considering their overall job satisfaction, more than half (53 percent) of the Female Block Supervisors had low job satisfaction, 44 percent had medium and only 3 percent had high job satisfaction.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Dhaka and Mymensingh agricultural regions of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE). There are 11 districts in these two agricultural regions and the total number of Female Block Supervisors (FBSs) is167 (Mymensingh 67 and Dhaka 100). Among these, eight Female Block Supervisors (Mymensingh 1 and Dhaka 7) who were placed in Upazila Headquarters had no field activities were excluded from this study. Thus, the total number of Female Block Supervisors having field activities within the 11 districts were 159 which constituted the population for this study. Two-thirds (67 percent) of the population from each of the agricultural regions was randomly selected as representative sample following stratified random sampling procedure considering the regions as strata. A Table of Random Numbers (Kerlinger, 1973) was used to select samples within each stratum. Thus, the sample size for Mymensingh agricultural region was 44 and that of Dhaka agricultural region was 62, making the total sample size 106. Data were collected personally by the rese.arcber through questionnaire and supervisor' s rating scale during May 7, 2000 to July 13, 2000. Data obtained from the Female Block Supervisors were first coded, transferred to a master sheet and then complied, tabulated, and analyzed according to the objectives of the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Academic achievement, family income, time allocation for field work, supervisor relaliomhip of the Female Block Supervisors were positively correlated with their job performance while rest of the variables namely, age, time allocation for office work, organizational participation, technical training n extension training need, technical knowledge, and extension knowledge had no relationships. Family income, time allocation for field work, and supervisor relationship of the Female Block Supervisors showed positive correlations with their job satisfaction while technical training need showed a negative correlation. The most important problems faced by the Female Block Supervisors were: i no incentive for successful job performance, ii. lack of interest of the Farmers to listen to technical advice, and iii. motivational problem for male farmers.
