Outdoor Recreation Potentials of the Foy's Lake Area

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The outdoor recreation potentials of the Foy's lake area have been investigated. Participant's observation and informal personal/group interview techniques were applied to assess the intensity of visits, monthly income from visitors, monthly expenses for park management, natural and artificial facilities of tourists, outdoor recreation problems and constraints, and the recreation activities participated by the visitors. Picnicking is the highest recreation activity (48%) and walking in the nature is the lowest (5%). The highest number of visitors by occupation, age group, and nature of visits are student (58%), 15-30 years (52%) and friends (32%) respectively. The' male-female ratio is 67 : 33. The most serious problems for the visitors is safety and for the management authority is water pollution. The study identifies that the Fey's lake area has all the components of a recreation park and it identifies some recommendations for development of the lake area to cater the outdoor recreation demand of the dwellers of metropolitan Chittagong.

Objectives:

To analyses the management problems, recreation behaviour and constraints faced by the visitors of Fey's lake area

Methodology:

The study was conducted on the basis of literature review, participant's observation and personal / group interviews with the visitors and the management authority. (i) Literature review: Nobody attempted any study about the Foys lake and its potentials a recreation spot. A few information was collected from a leaflet by the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation, Forest Working Plan of Chittagong Forest Division, 1978-79 to 1987-88 and the official documents on the lake by the Bangladesh Railways. (i i) Participant's observation: A three-day intensive survey was conducted using the participant's observations technique on Friday afternoon, Saturday and Wednesday noon of December, 1990. Recreation behaviour was particularly examined. The survey identified the existing physical facilities and future scope of outdoor recreation development. (iii) Personal and group interviews: Through informal and group interviews with 725 visitors, the demographic characters of the visitors, physical/social problems and constraints, etc. were identified. The management authority was interviewed to find out the shortcomings and constraints in the management and future development plan of the area.

Chittagong is being known as the queen of the east, but today it has become pale and colour less due to indiscriminate felling of trees, earth cutting from hills and un authorized construction works. The urban people of Chittagong needs some natural scenic spots to breath fresh air and to recreate since it has no park. The Foy's lake area has immense scope to provide the recreational opportunities to Chittagong city dwellers. So it should be developed as a recreation park to attract the visitors. To conserve the nature as well as to beautify the city and above all, to provide recreational facilities to the growing population Of metropolitan Chittagong, a proper development programme for the Fey's lake area should be taken up on a priority basis. Foy's lake area can be furnished with all biophysical components with proper safety measures for the visitors so that it can be a part of total tourism industry of the country. A wing of the railway department can be created for better management of the Foy's lake area or this area can be leased to any interested public or a private entrepreneur. A proper coordination should be made between the management authority and the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation to attract local as well as foreign tourists.
