Credit Utilization Behaviour of the Women Beneficiaries of Bangladesh Rural Development Board

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Rangpur Sadar, Mithapukur and Pirganj Upazila branch of Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB) under Rangpur district. A total number of 1126 borrowers constituted the population of which a sample of 120 ( 12%) were selected using simple random sampling technique tor this study. Data were collected:d by personal interviewing during 14 August to 13 September 2005. The findings revealed that a significant proportion of the borrowers (65.83 percent) made "full utilization" of their credit while 17.50 percent of them made "partial utilization" in the eight-assigned sectors. But the remaining 16.67 percent did not have any utilization of their credit. Based on the sector wise utilization of credit, the study further reveals that credit assigned for cottage industry was ranked first followed by tailoring, goat rearing, rice threshing, vegetable cultivation , rearing of milching cow, beef fattening and poultry rearing. Regarding the impact, most of the borrowers (88.33%) opined that the credit received from BRDB was profitable. Borrowers' characteristics viz., age, training experience, credit availability, cosmopoliteness were found to have a significant relationship with the utilization of credit.

Objectives:

The objectives of the study were to i) study the characteristics profile of the women borrowers of BRDB ii) determine the extent of credit utilization of the women borrowers of BRDB, and iii) explore the relationship between each of the characteristics of the borrowers' and their extent of credit utilization

Methodology:

Rangpur Sadar, Mithapukur and Pirganj Upazila branch of BRDB under Rangpur district were selected as the study area. The researchers prepared a list of the women borrowers of the selected 30 Samittees with the help of BRDB personnel working at the grass root level. After preparing the list, it was found that the total number of borrowers was 1126, which constituted the population for this study. A sample of 120 ( 12%) was selected from the population using simple random sampling technique. An interview schedule was prepared keeping the objectives in view and used as data collecting instrument mostly having closed form questions.Stati stical measures such as number, frequency distribution, average and standard deviation were used in describing the selected dependent and independent variables. Coefficient of correlation tests were used in order to test the relationships or selected characteristics or the respondents with their credit utilization . Five percent (0.05) level of significance was used as the basis for rejection of any null hypothesis.Measurement of Dependent Variables: Credit utilization behaviour of the women beneficiaries of BRDB was the dependent variable of the study. The extent of utilization was divided into three categories viz. fully utilized in assigned purpose, partially utilized in assigned purpose and utilized in areas or other than assigned purpose. Credits were allowed to borrow for eight enterprises. Borrowing credit against a single enterprise was supposed to be utilized by a borrower in any one of the above three categories. Achievement/Findings:

It was expected that utilization of credit of the women borrowers would be influenced and dominated by their various characteristics. The researchers exerted an all-out effort to select all those characteristics, which would influence credit utilization behaviour. The characteristics included were age, education, occupation, family size, family farm size, family income, training experience, credit availability, attitude towards BRDB and cosmopoliteness The observed value of r = 0.183 showed significant positive relation ship at 0.05 key of probability between credit availability of the borrowers and their utilization of credit. The observed relationship between the concerned vaiables indicates that the more credit availability of the borrowers , the more was the utilization of credit. The observed value of r = 0. 186 showed significant positive relationship at 0.05 level of probability between cosmopoliteness of the borrowers and their utilization of credit. The observed relationship between the concerned variables indicates that with the increase of cosmopoliteness of the borrowers, credit utilization also increases.
