Effect of Poly Bag Size on Growth of Some Forest Tree Seedlings of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seedlings of silkoroi (Albizia procera), chapalish (Artocarpus chaplasha), gamar (Gmelina arborea), champa (Michelia champaca), and teak (Tectona grandis) were raised in 3 different sizes of poly bags to study their growth performances at the nursery as well as in the field for the selection of an optimum size of poly bag for large scale propagation. The results showed that the height and diameter growth of these species increased with the increase of poly bag size, and maintained a good correlation with the seasonal variations (semi-dry, dry and wet season). In the field, seedlings raised in small and medium sizes of poly bags (15 x 10 cm and 23 x 15 cm) showed higher percentage of survivality as their root/shoot ratio was higher. The small size (15 x 10 cm) poly bags are, however, recommended for the propagation of silkoroi, champa and gamar and the medium size (23 x 15 cm) poly bags for teak and chapalish.

Objectives:

To find out an optimum size of poly bag for the growth of the seedlings of silkoroi (Albizia procera Roxb, Benth) , gamar(Gmelia arborea Roxb.), champa (Micheliachampaca Linn.) and teak (Tectona grandis Linn.) at the nursery stage and their subsequent field trials.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during the semi-dry (October-December), dry (January-March) and wet (April-July) seasons in 1984-85 at the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, nursery, Chittagong. The seeds of silkoroi and champa were collected from BFRI campus and those of chapalish, gamar and teak were collected from Chittagong Hill Tract forest division. The seeds were directly sown in the poly bags and placed in the nursery and irrigated periodically. Three different sizes (30 x 23 cm x 0.006 mm, 23 x 15 cm x 0.006 mm and 15 x 10 cmx 0.006 mm) of poly bags were used as treatments to investigate their effects on the seedling growth. The colour of the poly bags was white transparent and the rooting media were soil and cow dung in the ratio of 3 : 1. The randomized block design was followed with 3 replications and 30 plants for each treatment. The height growth and collar diameter of the seedlings were recorded in each month up to the age of 6 months (October-March) in one stage and finally on the 10 th month (July) in the 2 nd stage at the end of the experiment. The oven dry weight of root and shoot was also determined at the end of the experiment taking 10 plants in each treatment. However, for the survival percentage in the field, 15 seedlings in each treatment for each species were planted in 3 rows with 5 columns along the contour of a gentle hill slope at Dhum experimental research station in 1985 and data were collected after 2 years of plantation.

Achievement/Findings:

The height and diameter growth of all the species increased with the increase of poly bag size. The height and diameter growth in all the species except champa have good correlation with the seasonal variation.Silkoroi, champa and gamar raised in small poly bags showed the highest survivality, whereas teak and chapalish in medium size poly bags survived in highest percentages at field level. iv) Field survivality of all the species have good correlations with the higher root/shoot ratio. v) The small (15 x 10 cm) and medium (23 x 15 cm ) size poly bags showed higher root/shoot ratio than the big size poly bags in most of the species.The small size poly bags of 15 x 10 cm is recommended for the propagation of silkoroi, champa and gamar, and medium size poly bags of 23 x 15 cm for teak and chapalish.
