Develop Rice Varieties and Hybrids for Conservation Agriculture Systems in South Asia: Rice for Mechanized Direct Seeding and Water-saving Irrigation.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted with the objectives to evaluate exotic and locally developed hybrids under direct seeded conditions and assess the socio-economic aspects of direct seeding. he experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. In this method, sprouted seeds were sown on well prepared puddle land. Direct seeding was be done by using Drum Seeder. Among the tested entries, two exotic hybrids and one locally developed hybrid performed well in late Boro at transplanting condition. Exotic hybrid Riser out yielded both the check variety with more than 20% yield advantage. Locally developed hybrid BRRI hybrid dhan2 showed similar yield advantage over both the check variety.

Methodology:

The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. In this method, sprouted seeds were sown on well prepared puddle land. Direct seeding was be done by using Drum Seeder. Unit plot size was 8 m. Thinning was done at proper time. Data was collected on plant height (cm), No. of effective tillers, No. of tellers/m², Flag leaf length, days to 50% flowering, spikelet fertility (%), Panicle length (cm), TGW, Plot yield (kg) and Grain yield (t/ha). Fertilizers were applied @ 150: 100: 70: 60: 10kg/ha Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnSO₄respectively. Basal: ¼ Urea, Full dose of TSP, Gypsum, Zn So₄, 2/3 MP; Top dressing: ¼ Urea (15-20 DAT), ¼ Urea (35-40 DAT), ¼ Urea (booting Stage) and 1/3 MP at 2nd top dress of urea. Water management, Weeding and Insects and pest control were done when it was required.

Achievement/Findings:

From this experiment it is clearly evident that BRRI hybrid dhan2 can easily be recommended for Aus season transplanting as favorable variety and can be harvested within 100 days after sowing in direct seeded condition.
