Effect of Sesbania Rostrata as Relay Intercrop on Aus Rice and as Green Manure on T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to see the effect of Sesbania rostrata relay inter-cropping on transplant aus rice and subsequent effect as green manure on the performance of transplant aman rice. Relay inter-cropping of S. rostrata did not exert any significant adverse effect on the growth and yield of aus rice. Green manuring with fresh biomass of S. rostrata @ 17.5 t ha^-1 along with 50% of recommended Urea-N in transplant aman rice produced the highest grain yield. However, green manure alone appeared to be sufficient to maintain rice grain yield as with standard dose of Urea-N. The study also revealed that green manuring along with Urea-N maintained soil fertility level better than the standard dose of Urea-N.

Objectives:

A study was undertaken to see the performance of intercropping Sesbania spp. with rice and subsequent green manuring in the succeeding crop for organic matter maintenance.

Methodology:

The study was conducted through two experiments at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during March 1993 to December 1994. The experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Two species of Sesbania were tested as relay inter-crop with different planting arrangements mentioned below. A.Species: (a) Sesbania aculeata (b) Sesbania rostrata B. Planting arrangement: (a) 25 cm apart between two rows of rice (25 cm X 15 cm) (b) 50 cm apart in one row interval of rice (50 cm X 15 cm) (c) Control (No Sesbania was relayed) Sesbania seedlings of 15 days old were transplanted as relay inter-crop in rice field at panicle initiation stage. Rice was harvested on 5 May 1995, while Sesbania was allowed to grow up to sixty days after transplanting when they were incorporated in the soil for the second experiment. Effect of Sesbania rostrata as Green Manure on T. Aman Rice BR 11, a modern rice variety was used as test crop. The experimental treatments included three different levels of urea and one control, which are as follows : (a) N 100% (80 kg ha ^-1) (b) N 50% (40 kg ha ^-1) (c) N 25% (20 kg ha ^-1) (d) N 0% (Control) Data were collected according to treatment and were analyzed statistically . Soils were collected before transplanting and after harvesting of rice to determine nutrient status.

Achievement/Findings:

Performance of Sesbania spp. grown as relay inter-crop in aus rice. It was observed that survival rate of Sesbania rostrata was higher than that of Sesbania aculeata. Data on plant height revealed that height of S. rostrata plants were nearly four times than that of S. aculeata. The fresh biomass yield of S. rostrata was also nearly double compared to that of S. aculeata. The highest amount of green biomass was produced by S. rostrata at a spacing of 25X20 cm (17.51 t ha ^-1 measured at rice harvest. This might be due to higher number of plant populations per unit area as well as vigorous growth of S. rostrata plants. Moreover, S.rostrata nodulated along its stem in addition to the root systems as compared to only in the root system of S. aculeata, which gave this species an added advantage of nitrogen fixation over its native counterpart. From the experimental results and discussion it might be finally argued thatS^. rostrata could effectively be relayed in the aus rice without any adverse impact on the growth and yield of aus rice. Subsequently it could be used as green manure in the succeeding transplant aman rice as an effective replacement of urea-N. The study suggested that green manured with S. rostrata @ 17.5 t ha^-1 , of green biomass along with 25% of the recommended dose of added N is sufficient for sustainable maintenance of productivity in rice farming as well as favourable soil nutrient status. However, further studies in-depth are also required in different agro climatic conditions to reach more generalized conclusion
