Department of Agricultural Extension Education Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh

Data were collected from 183 members of FFS, representing 3 DAE, 3 CARE and one joint school through interview schedule. Scoring was used to measure the knowledge gained by the respondents.Findings of the study show that the performance of DAE's FFS was better than those of CARE and joint schools in terms of providing knowledge to the member participants. In terms of over all ranking,it was found that members of DAE's FFS ranked first, while CARE's FFS ranked second and members of joint FFS ranked third in case of acquiring IPM knowledge. Extent of performance made by DAE, CARE and jointly by DAE and CARE in running the FFS. was not equal and it was statistically different in some cases. Performance made by DAE in its FFS was far better than that of CARE as well as that of being run by DAE and CARE jointly. It was found that the personnel of DAE spent more time and delivered more inputs to the members of their FFS, while CARE could not provide equal facilities excluding more frequent visits to their FFS members as that of DAE.The case of joint FFS was even worse. Among farmers' selected characteristics academic qualification , extension media contact. innovativeness and aspiration were positively related in terms of acquiring knowledge by the members of FFS. Majority of the FFS members of all types moderately used the selected innovations. But the members of DAE's FFS fully used the innovation as compared to those of CARE's and joint FFS. In the contrary, members of joint FFS slightly used the innovation.

  Performance
  1. To assess the IPM knowledge of the members of different Farmer Field Schools conducted by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere (CARE) independently and jointly,
  2. To determine the extent of performance of DAE and CARE independently and jointly for the successful operation of different FFSs, in terms  of frequency of resource persons' involvement in FFS, number of sessions conducted by the trainers' during the period of FFS, time spent in hours by the resource personnel in conducting FFS, frequency of monitoring and supervision made by the resource persons' during the period of FFS, number of inputs supplied for conducting FFS,
  3. To explore the relationship between the IPM knowledge gained by the members of different FFSs and some of their selected characteristics and
  4. To determine the problems faced by the members of efferent FFSs operated by DAE and CARE independently and jointly.

Four unions namely Gauripur, Dhakakhala, Ramgopalpur and Bokainagar under the Gauripur thana of Mymensingh district where FFS were in operation constituted the study area. Population of the study In the Gauripur thana all together there were 43 FFS with 923 members organized by DAE and CARE separately and also jointly. These members were the population of this study. Sampling technique The total respondents for the study were 183, out of whom 75 members were from DAE FFS, 75 from CARE's FFS and remaining 33 from joint FFS. Variables of the study Each of the selected twelve characteristics of the farmers was considered as independent variables, while the members' knowledge on IPM and performance of the DAE and CARE for the conduction of FFS were dependent variables. Measurement of variables Appropriate  scale  was  used  to  denationalize  the  independent  and  dependent variables for their measurement.

Majority of the members of all types of FFS was young to middle-aged. Young members were more in Joint FFS while old in CARE's FFS. But the more number of middle aged members were found in DAE's FFS. In terms of gathering knowledge young and middle aged members were more potential. The members of DAE's FFS were more educated than those of CARE's and joint FFS. Educated members received more knowledge on IPM than the less educated or illiterate members. Thus, it may be concluded that this characteristic served as a significant fostering agent to acquire knowledge. Family size of the members did not bear any serious in gathering knowledge Farm size played both significant positive and negative role in acquiring knowledge by FFS members. Thus, it may be concluded that this variable played a divergent role in gathering knowledge. Both in DAE's and CARE's FFS, the members who had higher annual income gained more knowledge. But in joint FFS, this variable exhibit a tendency toward a positive role in the gathering of knowledge. Therefore, annual family income played a positive role in acquisition of knowledge by the FFS members.
