Attitude of the Block Supervisors Towards the Effect of Modern Agricultural Technologies on Environment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Attitude of the BSs towards the effect of modem agricultural technologies on environment was positively significant to each of their age, level of education, training experience, cosmopoliteness and knowledge on chemical fertilizers, pesticides and irrigation water. Besides tenure of service and annual income of the BSs had also positive relationships with their attitude towards the effects of the modern agricultural technologies on environment. However, family size of the BSs showed insignificant negative relationship with the attitude of the BSs towards the effect of modem agricultural technologies on environment.

Objectives:

To determine the attitude of the Block Supervisors (BSs) towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment and to explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the BSs and their attitude towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in three randomly selected upazilas, namely, Ishwargonj, Gouripur and Phulpur under Mymensingh district. Therefore, the BSs of those three upazilas constituted the population of this study. However, data were collected from the sample, rather than population. For this purpose 100 BSs out of 149 BSs (Two-third of total BSs) of all the three upazilas were selected as sample by using random sampling method. A personal interview schedule was used as the data-gathering instrument. Direct questions, open form questions and different scales were used to obtain relevant information. Prior to final data collect on the completely developed interview schedule was pre-tested in the study area. Data were collected by the researcher himself through a door to door visit. The duration of data collection was from 10 September to 25 September 2001. Each of the selected characteristics of the BSs was considered as an independent variable while attitude towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment of BSs was the dependent variables of the study. Appropriate scale was used to operationalize the independent and dependent variables, whatever needed. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics e.g. frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviations and ranks. To test the hypothesis, "Pearson product moment correlation coefficient" was employed. Five- percent level of significance was used as the basis for rejecting a null hypothesis.

Achievement/Findings:

Age of the BSs showed a significant positive relationship with the attitude of BSs towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment.This indicate that aged BSs had more favourable attitude towards the effect of modem agricultural technologies on environment than younger BSs. Educational level of BSs played significant positive role on the attitude of the BSs towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment. This implied that the BSs who had higher level of education had favourable attitude towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment. Training experience of the BSs had significant positive relationship with the attitude of the BSs towards the effect of modern agricultural technologies on environment. This implied that the more the training exposure the BSs were more knowledgeable on different modem agricultural technologies and their effect on environment .
