Pith Behaviour in the Culm of Dendrocalamus Giganteus Munro(bambusoideae : Poaceae)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In this paper the general pith behaviour including the lacunae formation in the hollow culm internode and developm ent of string like processes from nodal partition walls in Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro have been discussed. The young shoot in D . giganteus is solid, conical and covered with imbricating sheaths. It consists of solid massive tissue which ultimately develops into hollow internode with transverse partition wall without any outgrowth. The young shoot in solid state appears as dark coloured cross bars separated by light coloured parenchymatous tissue. The dark coloured zones become the nodal partition walls. The lacuna• develops through disintegration of coloured zones. The string like process that develops from the nodal partition wall is an abnormal behaviour of the pith. It consists of vascular bundles and parenchymatous tissue. The vascular bundles arc of type Ill of Grosser and Liese (1971).

Objectives:

To determine the true nature of the string like processes and to know general pith behaviour of D. giganteus and the formation of lacunae.

Methodology:

The young emerging shoots of D. giganteus were collected from the Bambusctum of Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong during the months of July-August. These young shoots were splitcd longitudinally and thin longitudinal hand sections of the solid young shoots were cut by a safety razor blade. Temporary slides were made with this hand . sections after staining with safranin. Thin hand cross sections of string like processes that developed inside the node were cut and permanent slides were made after staining with haematoxylin. The thickness of the thin and thick string like process were measured at three different zones i. c. the base, the middle and the tip by a slide calliper. Different anatomical features were studied from these slides under the microscope. Photographs and photomicrographs were taken to show different features.
