Validation of the Existing Volume Tables for Telya Garjan (dipterocarpusturbinatus) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Two-way (Metric) Volume Table of telya garjan (Dipterocarpus turbinatus) for plantation forest published from the Bangladesh Forest Research Institute, Chittagong was reported to give higher estimate than the actual volume. A test of validity was, therefore, made for the table and also for some other existing volume functions of the species. It was found that the volume function of the table in metric units was incorrect and as such an appropriate function has been developed. An alternative volume function has also been proposed in the paper. Volume functions developed by other authors for this species have been found unbiased .

Objectives:

To test the biased volume table as well as other existing volume functions currently used in the country.

Methodology:

A random sample of 56 standing trees of telya garjan of various diameters was measured from the plantation forest of Fashiakhali and Bhomeriaghona ranges under Cox's Bazar Forest Division. These two locations were selected for the study as they had the large scale plantations of telya garjan and expected to represent the Division. A second sample of 66 felled trees was also measured in the same way from the natural forest of Thainkhali,Ukhiaghat, Kutupalong, Khuniapalong and Monkhali range of the same Division .Data on diameter at breast height (0), total height (H), bole log length (upto 4" top diameter for plantation and 8" for natural), and bole log diameter at every tenth foot were collected during the period from September, 1988 to March,1989. Sample trees were considered so that it covers the diameter classes ranged from 4" to 26" on which most of the existing volume tables were prepared. Measurements on diameter (inch) and height (foot) of the standing trees for both the plantations and natural stands were taken.

Achievement/Findings:

The two-way Metric Volume Table of telya garjan for plantation forest prepared by Latif and Islam (1984) was checked with the field data and found incorrect. The regression model adopted for the table was also verified. Estimate of the regression constant and the co-efficients of the model V (0B)=0.00039+0.00065D2+0.00015DH +0.00024 O₂H was found incorrect. The model was refitted with the original field data for the purpose. The existing incorrect model has been replaced by the refitted (correct) model V(OB)=0.002522.
