Ten lablab bean genotypes were subjected to stability analysis under four environments differentiated by sowing dates. The analysis after Eberhart and Russel's model suggested that most of the genotypes were responsive to environmental changes, and performance of these genotypes in different environments could hardly be predicted. Genotypes 0557, 0599 and DSN9 were relatively stable for days to flowering. OS106 and OS164 were less sensitive and more adaptive for pods/inflorescence. DS30 with higher 10-pod weight was considered to be stable and suitable tor growing in poor environment. DSN9 was high yielding; but DS30, 0557, 0599, 05106 and 05164 appeared to be most stable for yield.

The present work was carried out to study stability and response of selected lablab bean genotypes to some cultural environments (crop seasons) with changing natural daylengths.

The experiment which was conducted at the experimental farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh, included ten prospective genotypes/breeding lines of lablab bean [Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet]. The genotypes are designated with BAU accession nos. as follows: KBS1, OS30,0852, OS57, 0899; 08106, 08116, 08161, 08164 and OSN9. Four cultural environments, as considered by differential sowing dates, were Env. 1 (15 May/96), Env. 2 (15 June/96), Env. 3 (15 July/96) and Env. 4 (15 Aug./96). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four replications in each environment/sowing date. Pits were spaced 2 m both between rows and within rows. One healthy plant was allowed to grow in each pit, though several seedlings were raised initially. Normal cultural practices were followed as and when necessary. Data on various characters were recorded, but only four characters (days to flowering, pods/inflorescence, 10-pod weight and pod yield/plant) are considered and presented here. Among the genotypes, KBS1 was the earliest in flowering, followed by DS161, DS116 and DS57, and the highest number of inflorescence/plant was found in 08116. The genotype DSN9 gave the highest pod yield/plant (7.102 kg), it thus stood superior to all other genotypes. DS30 however produced the heaviest individual pods as reflected by 10-pod weight. From the environmental mean, it was observed that days to flowering progressively decreased with corresponding delay in sowing; Env. 1 with earliest sowing date took only 84 days to flower. Such clowering behaviour was probably due to photoperiod sensitive behavior of most of the genotypes which are timely- fixed. Considering the mean, unit regression (b1 =1) and the lowest deviation form the regression (s2d), a genotype must be considered as stable. So, neither of the ten genotypes were stable for days to flowering; OS106 and OS164 were more adaptive to environment changes for pods/inflorescence; OS30 was desirable for poor environment for 10-pod weight and in case of pod yield , OS57, OS99, OS106 and OS164 were less responsive to environmental changes and more adaptive.
