Selection Parameters for Some Quantitative Characters in Bread Wheat

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic analysis was done for eight quantitative characters in 55 diverge genotypes of bread wheat to estimate different genetic parameters for those characters. Highly significant differences were found among the genotypes for the characters studied. Phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than that of the corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters. High heitability with high genetic advance was noted for grains per spike and 1000-grain weight. Other characters had either high heritability or high genetic advance except plant height. Moderate heritability and low genetic advance was recorded for plant height. Genotypic correlation of grain yield was significant with all the characters. However, phenotypic correlation was significant only with spikes per plant, grains per spike and maturity days. Path coefficient analysis indicated that spikes per plant, grains per spike and 1000-grain weight had high direct positive contribution towards grain yield. None of the selection indices gave higher efficiency than that obtained from selection of grain yield alone.

Objectives:

To study the genotypic and non genotypic variability, correlation, path coefficient and selection index, which will be helpful in future breeding programme for wheat yield improvement.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted with 55 bread wheat genotypes. These materials were originated from two different sources i) CIMMYT, Mexico and ii) Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur, Randomized complete block design with three replication was followed during experimentation. Ten plants were randomly chosen from the middle row of each plot for recording heading days, maturity days, spikes per plant, plant height, grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and yield per plant. Variance ratios were calculated from the analysis of variance for each characters separately. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation were computed. Broad sense heritability and genetic advance at 5% selection intensity were estimated. Path coefficient analysis was also computed.

A wide range of variation was observed for heading days, maturity days, spikes per plant, plant height, grains per spike, 1000-grain weight and yield per plant as shown by their variance ratios. The highest genotypic (45-59) and phenotypic (59.07) variances were found for grains per spike and the lowest for spikes per plant (0.86 and 1.41). Phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than their corresponding genotypic coefficient of variation for all the characters. Yield per plant, spikes per plant, grains per spike and 1000- grain weight showed wide ranges of genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variation that can be exploited by appropriate selection. The discriminant function technique was applied for constructing suitable selection indices for selection of grain yield. Yield per plant (x1) along with three primary yield contributing characters viz. spikes per plant (x2), grains per spike (x3) and 1000-grain weight (x4) having higher direct effect on grain yield were included for the discriminant function. The results indicated that all the selection indices gave either almost the same or lower efficiency than that obtained from grain yield only except when all the yield components were included in the selection index. It was also observed that, selection based on an individual character did not show a better genetic advance than that obtained from straight selection for grain yield. When yield was included with its component characters in a selection index the efficiency increased as compared with that in which yield was not included.
