Effect of Nutgrass Density and Plant Population on the Growth and Yield of Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Trials were conducted in the net house of Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from May to September 1994 to study the effect of density of nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus L.) on olitorius jute. Four densities of both nutgrass and jute viz., 28, 56, 84 and 112 plants m^-2 were included in the study. Mo oculture of nutgrass and jute under those densities were also practiced. Growth, yield and dry matter production of jute were unaffected by nutgrass density of 28 plants m^-2. The threshold level of infestation was between 28 and 56 plants m-². Jute density ranging from 84 to 112 plants m^-2 did not affect the fibre yield although it showed an increased trend of yield with Increasing density. Higher jute density resulted lower dry matter production of nutgrass upto a level of 84 plants m^-2 • Further increase in jute plant density had a little effect on the dry matter production of nutgrass. Nutgrass exhibited significantly lower competitive ability with higher jute densities.

Objectives:

To know the effects of density of nutgrass and plant population on the growth and yield of olitorius jute.

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out in earthen pots in the net house of Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from May to September 1994. Four densities of nutgrass and jute viz., 2, 4, 6 and 8 plants pot -3, equivalent to 28, 56, 84 and 112 plants m-2 , respectively were included in the study. Monoculture of nutgrass and jute under those densitis were also practiced. The treatment were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications.The earthen pots of 30 em in diameter and 30 em in depth were filled with silty loam soil, collected from the top soil (0 to 15 em) of the Agronomy Field Laboratory. The olitorius jute seeds of variety 0-4 and nutgrass tubers were sown on 12 May 1994. For the yield and yield contributing characters jute plants were harvested on 22 September 1994 at the flower setting stage. After harvesting the following parameters were recorded: plant height, stem diameter at base, middle and top; bark thickness, fibre yield and stick yield. Dry weights of different parts of jute and nutgrass were recorded after oven drying at 80 ± 5°C for 48 hours.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield variation of jute at different plants densities might be due to intra and inter specific competition for growth factors like nutrients, moisture and light. In densely population plot the competition is higher and it is reverse in lower population plot. In lower plant densities, the plant could utilize maximum available growth factors to grow individually good plants which ultimately reflected in their higher values of yield attributes. Although higher density rendered the lower values of yield attributes, the overall effects of higher number of plants per unit area might led to higher crop yield. Biomass and yie!d reduction in a crop ecosystem are constrained by limited growth resources and hence increase of plant density may increase yield.
