An experiment was conducted at farmer's field of Varoimari and Dhuitl villages (lshurdi,Pabna) during 1995-96 and 1996-97 in Gopalpur Soil Series of High Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ 11) to find out the effect of boron on the yield of papaya. Boron was applied at the rate of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 2.5 kg/ha along with a common dose of NPKSZn in RCBD with four replications. The yield and yield contributing characters of papaya responded significantly to added boron up to 2.0 kg B/ha, this dose gave an additional fruit yield of 104% and 98% over control at Varoimari and Dhulti sites, respectively. The highest benefit cost ratio of 968 and 913 were obtained by 2.0 kg B/ha application in Dhulti and Varoimari sites, respectively. The rate of 2.0 Kg B/ha was thus recommended for obtaining higher economic yield of papaya in the area under study.

An experimem was conducted at farmer's field of Varoimari and Dhulti Villages of lshurdi, Pabna during 1995-96 and 1996-97 in Gopalpur Soil Series under High  Ganges River  Floodplain  agroecological zone (AEZ 11).  The experimental field  was a  high  land having  silty  loam  soil  texture and  calcareous  in  nature. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The unit plot size was 6m x 4m and each pit size was 50cm x 50cm x 50cm. Six levels of boron viz. 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 kg boron per hectare  were applied with a common dose of 150-44-125-10-5 kg N, P, S, Zn and 12.5 tones cowdung per hectare. Forty five day old seedlings were transplanted on 20 May in 1995 and 25 April in 1996 with a spacing of 2m x 2m. Three seedling were transplanted 30 cm apart in each pit in a triangular fashion to ensure one female plant  per pit. The full amount   of P,S, Zn and cowdung  were applied in the pit before 10 days of transplantation. Boron (as boric acid) fertilizer was applied during final pit preparation. The total urea and MP were applied as top dress in four equal installments starting from month after transplanting with 45 days intervals.Intercultural operations including weeding, irrigation etc. and preventive and curative plant protection measures were done as and when needed. One female plant was retained finally per pit and two others were removed at flowering stage. When all three plants of a pit were male, one male was kept and others were removed. Mature fruits showing yellow string were harvested individually. The fruit harvesting was started from December and continued up to March  in  both  the  years. Data  on  the  yield  (marketable )  and  other  yield  contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically.

Number of fruits per plant, weight per fruit and fruit yield per plant were significantly increased with each incremental application of boron upto 2 kg/ha at both locations and the highest dose (2.5 kg/ha) had a negative effect on papaya. The fruit yield increased due to application of 2 kg B/ha by 104% and 98% compared to no boron treated plot at Varoimari and Dhulti sites, respectively. The fruit yield was decreased at 2.5 kg B/ha. The highest yield of 122 t/ha and 133t/ha was obtained from 2 kg B/ha and the minimum yield in boron control plot (60 t/ha and 67 t/ha) at Varoimari and Dhulti sites, respectively. Application of  2.0 kg B/ha have the highest benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 913 and 968 per taka invested on boron fertilizer at Varoimari and Dhulti sites, respectively while it was only 777 and 687 at Varoimari and 847 and 775 at Dhulti sites with 2.5 and 1.5 kg B/ha, respectively. The results suggested that application of 2.0 kg B/ha was the most suitable dose for obtaining higher economic yield of papaya in High Ganges River Floodplain soils.
