A field experiment was conducted to identify appropriate sowing time; to identify the best water management practice; and to compare the interaction of sowing time and water management practice.Experiment was set-up in split-split plot design with three replications at BRRI farm, Gazipur in Aman and Boro season 2005 and 2006. There were four sowing date on main plot and three water treatments were in sub plot. Water treatments were: rainfed, one irrigation at vegetative stage and one at reproductive stage and  one irrigation at vegetative stage and two at reproductive stage. Sowing dates were: 16 June, 1 July, 16 July and 31 July. Rice cultivars BRRI dhan39 was used. Pre germinated seeds were sown in line by drum seeder in puddled soil at different sowing date. For the case of 1st sowing (S1), 27 mm rainfall occurred on 15th June. Sowing was done on 18th June and next rainfall occurred on 23rd June. So, seedlings were properly established. There was no rainfall for 10 days from 25 July to 4th August and therefore seeding suffered from water stress at tillering stage. So, yield was reduced in rainfed condition. Another two water stress occurred during reproductive stage from 54 to 64 days and 65 to 78 days, which hampered yield. So, yield were reduced in I1 and I2 irrigation treatment plots. For the case of 2nd sowing (S2), during maximum tillering stage, there was no water stress. During reproductive stage plants did not suffer from water stress. So, yield was high and no significant difference in grain yield was found among the different water treatments. A 10 day long water stress occurred after 9 days of seedling in the 3rd sowing treatment and the crop suffered. Minimum rainfall occurred during maximum tillering stage, A 7 day long water stress occurred at panicle initiation stage and minimum rainfall occurred at grain filling stage. So, yield was reduced in I1 and I2 water treatmentI. In 4th sowing (S4), seeds are sown on 31 July. Sowing was done after applying 90 mm of water for land preparation and after sowing minimum water was applied by sprinkling. Seed was established properly. No water stress was found at maximum tillering, panicle initiation and grain filling stages. So, yield was higher in all the water treatments.

i)                    To identify appropriate sowing time;

ii)                  To identify the best water management practice; and

iii)                To compare the interaction of sowing time and water management practice.

Experiment was set-up in split-split plot design with three replications at BRRI farm, Gazipur in Aman and Boro season 2005 and 2006. Individual plot size was 2.4 m x 4.5 m having 1.0 m x 0.5 m buffers area around each experimental unit. Fertilizer management, weed management and other cultural management practices were followed as per BRRI recommendation. Fertilizer doses were applied at the rate of 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulfate, respectively. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation.  Urea was applied in four equal splits at 25, 40, 55 and 65 days after sowing (DAS). Irrigation water was applied as per water treatment and was measured by using a vertical gauge installed in the middle of experimental plot. Herbicide and insecticide were used to control weeds and insect-pests. Rice yield was estimated by harvesting samples from 1 m2 area. Harvested paddy was threshed, cleaned and weighed for determine the yield. Finally, the yield was adjusted at 14% moisture content for determining yield per hectare.

Total rainfall during the growing period varied from 1055 to 1489 mm. WUE was highest in S4I1 treatment (112%). Water productivity was highest (4.81 kg/ha-mm) in treatment S4I1. Highest yield was obtained from S1I3 treatment (3.84 t/ha).
