A field experiment was conducted at the coastal area in the aus season of 1994 and 1995 at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BAAl) Regional Station, Sonagazi Farm, Feni to find out the suitable sowing method and rice cultivar for the said area. Experimental treatments consisted of i) two rice cultivars viz. BR21 and a local cuitivar Binnatoa and II) three sowing  methods  viz.  broadcasting,  line  sowing  and  dibbling.  The  results  revealed  that irrespective of cuitivars, dibbling method produced the highest number of tillers, panicles, filled grains panicle/1000-grain  weight and, grain yield followed by line sowing and broadcasting method.  in  case of cultivars, Binnatoa produced the highest number of tiller m-2 and panicles m-2   than BR21. But BR21 gave the highest filled grains panicle-1  and 1000-  grain weight.

To find out  the  suitable  sowing method and cultivar of rice in coastal areas under rainfed condition among the studied variety and sowing methods.

A field experiment was conducted in the aus season of 1994 and 1995 at the Bangladesh  Rice Research Institute (BRRI) Regional Station, Sonagazi Farm, Feni located at the south-east coastal areas of Bangladesh. The test location was a medium high land with silty loam having pH 7.1, organic matter 1.70%, total N 0.073%, available P(Oisen) 13.1 ppm and exchangeable K 0.31 meq 100-1 g soil. The experiment treatments were i) two rice cultivars  viz. BR21  and "Binnatoa" and ii) three sowing methods  viz broadcasting,  line sowing and dibbling. The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized block design (CRBD) with three replications. The unit- plot size was 6x5 m 2. The seed rate was 80, 50 and 30 kg ha-1  for broadcasting, line sowing and dibbling methods, respectively. The seeds were sown at a spacing of 20 cm for line sowing and 20x20 cm for dibbling methods. The soil Fertilizers as N, P205,  K20 and S were applied at the rate of 60-40-40-10 kg ha-1  from urea, triple supper phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively. All fertilizers and one third of urea were applied as basal dose and rest of it was applied in two equal splits which were top dressed at 20 days after sowing (DAS) and 7 days   before panicle initiation (PI). The observations  as tillers, panicles, filled grain production and 1000  grain  weight  were area of each plot at the maturity of the crop. Grain yield was recorded from whole plot basis and adjusted at 14% moisture content. The salinity level of the experimental plots were recorded at sowing, vegetative, reproductive and maturity of the crop. The collected data were analyzed following a standard statistical procedures (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Irrespective  of  variety, the  highest  grain  yield  was  obtained  from  dibbling method followed by line sowing (2.33-2.36 t ha-1  and broadcasting (1.68- ) 1.71 t ha-1 methods  in both the  years but  there was no significant difference  between dibbling and line sowing methods. The highest grain yield in dibbling methods might be due to the influence of higher panicle number. In case of variety, BR21 produced the highest grain yield (2.66-2.71 t ha-1 followed by Binnatoa (1.60-1.98  t ha-1)  irrespective of sowing methods due to the higher number of filled grains and heavier 1000-grain weight.
