Socio-economic Condition of a Bangladesh Village: a Study at BARInd-tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This paper reports the findings of an investigation of the socio-economic condition of the rural people of Bangladesh. In this paper five issues, namely, (I) Household (HH) Size distribution, (ii) Education level of HH heads, (iii) Livestock owned by the villagers, (lv) Land holdings and (v) Income of HH at three villages of Barind-tract had been discussed In brief. All of these act as constrains to agricultural development, it was found that the male female ratio was 1.5:1, forty one percent villagers were landless, and sixteen percent have an annual Income range in between Taka 50 (0 and Taka 15000 only. The education level of the villagers was also found very poor- around 32% HH head does not any formal education.

Objectives:

A study on some of the villages of the Barind Tract, the driest part of the country representing 5.37% of total area of Bangladesh, was taken up to know the socio-economic condition of the area.

Methodology:

A five months field work was completed during August to December 1996, a period which covered the post monsoon as well as a part of winter season. Both primary and secondary data were collected from different sources. For primary data, formal and informal interviews were conducted. A prestructured questionnaire was used to interview every household to collect both the quantitative and qualitative information. In case of secondary data. several available sources were utilized. For example, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), Local offices of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), regional office of Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI) etc. The categorical data were coded before punching into MINITAB worksheet. Statistical method, linear regression were used for analysis. Calculation of percentage was also used as another tool of analysis for interpretation of some information of the study area.

Achievement/Findings:

Literacy is common among the surveyed villagers which accounts for 32%. Literacy is very much important while motivating people in any developmental work and the educational infrastructure should be laid and integrated after and elaborate exercise of manpower planning. Land is a big constraint among the study villages having average household area of 0.04 ha. and own land of 0.44 ha. only. A big group of landless farmers was found which was estimated as 40.65%. A suitable policy is needed regarding this issue. This is crucial for motivating people towards the steps for agricultural development. Because, it is very difficult to convince the villagers for long term investment for instance, soil health management, when the land is not belonged to them.
