An experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during the transplant aman season, 1998 to observe the effect of different source and rates of urea nitrogen on the growth and yield of transplant aman rice. The urea forms and rates were i. control (no nitrogen) il. Prilled urea (PU) at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1 iii. PU at the rate of 70 kg N ha-1 iv. Urea supergranule (USG) at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1 v. USG at the rate of 70 kg N ha-1 and the cultivar BR11 and Binashail were used for the study. The results showed that USG at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1 gave the highest grain yield (4.76 t ha-1 than other nitrogenous fertilizers with their respective doses for both the varieties. Tallest plant (133.46 em) and longest panicle (26.84 cm) were produced by the USG at the rate of 70 kg N ha-1 with Binashail. The other growth and yield characters i.e., tillers hill-1, bearing and nonbearlng tillers hill-1 and grains panicle-1, were favourably influenced by the USG at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1 with BR11. Marginal analysis showed that, the gross returns and marginal rate of return (MAR) were highest in USG at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1 which showed a gradual decrease with the increase rate of nitrogenous fertilizers.

To determine a suitable forms and rates of urea for higher yield of rice.

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy field laboratory of he Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, during transplant aman season, 1998. The experiment consisted of two factors viz. (a) forms and rates of urea and (b) variety. The urea forms and rates were i. control (no nitrogen) ii. PU  at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1  iii. PU at the rate of 70 kg N ha-1  iv. USG  at the  rate  of 35 kg N ha-1  v. USG  at  the  rate  of  70 kg N ha-1 and cv. BR11 and Binashail were used for the study. The  e:xperiment was  laid  in  a  Randomized  Complete  Block  Design  with  three replication having a unit plot size of 4m x 2.5 m. spaced at 25 x 15 em using two to three seedlings ha-1. Two forms of urea nitrogen eg. prilled urea and urea super granule  were applied. Prilled urea were applied in three equal splits at 10, 30 and 50 DAT and USG placed at 8 to 10 cm depth in the   center of 4 hills in alternate rows at 7 DAT. In control plots, nitrogen fertilizer was not applied. Data  on  growth,  yield  and  yield  components  were  recorded  from  10  randomly selected plants for each plot. The crop was harvested plot wise at 80% maturity. The yield of grain  and  straw  were  recorded  after  threshing,  winnowing  and  drying  at  14%  moisture content.  Recorded  data  were  analyzed  statistically  with  the  help  of  computer  package MSTAT and the mean differences were adjudged with Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomex, 1984).

These results revealed that, USG gave significantly better response  than PU for both the varieties, Better response  in growth characters  and N uptake were found by USG at the rate of 70 kg N ha-1 and in yield characters  by USG at the rate of 35 kg N ha-1  and these were agreed with those of Sarder et al.,  (1988) and Rajgopalan and Palanisamy (1985). From marginal analysis· it was observed that, the yield and gross returns were highest in USG @  35 kg N ha-1. But it is desirable to maximize the return up to the highest economic threshold with limited resources. Therefore, the marginal analysis has done to find out the highest marginal rate of returns (MRR) and It was fond that MAR was highest (1083%) with the USG, applied at the rate of 35 kg N ha- 1 .
