Genetic Variation and Character Association in Rainfed Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out using sixteen advanced rice lines/cultivars in three successive T. aman seasons of 1996, 1997 and 1998. Observations were recorded on grain yield and six yield contributing characters in order to obtain information on genetic variation and characters associations of rice. High phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation were found for plant height, number of grains/panicle and 1000-graln weight. Number of effective tillers/hill and grain yield/plant had only high phenotypic coefficient of variation. Plant height, number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight exhibited high heritability accompanied by high genetic advance. Genotypic correlation coefficients were found to be higher than their corresponding phenotypic ones. Number of effective tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and days to maturity showed significant positive associations with grain yield/plant. Multiple regression analysis suggested that six characters under study could explain about 98% of the variability in grain yield/plant. Number of effective tillers/hill, number of grains/panicle and 1000- grain weight were the major contributor towards the grain yield/plant. Therefore, emphasis should be given on these traits for selecting high yielding rice genotypes.

Objectives:

To study the extent of variability, heritability and genotypic advance for grain yield, yield contributing characters and their associations in rainfed rice.

Methodology:

The experimental materials consisted of sixteen advanced breeding lines/cultivars of rice and the experiment was conducted at Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) Farm, Mymensingh, during the successive T. aman seasons of 1996, 1997 and 1998. The experiment was set in randomized complete block design with three replications. Spacing between hills, rows, plots and replications were 15 cm, 20 cm, 60 cm and 75 cm, respectively. Fertilization were done with 80 N, 60 P₂0₅ and 40 K₂0 kg/ha, respectively. Standard cultural practices were followed as and when necessary. Ten sample plants from each plot were randomly taken to record observations on plant height (cm), number of effective tillers/hill, panicle length (cm), and number of grains/panicle, 1000-grain weight (g), days to maturity, and grain yield/plant (g).The phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance at 5% selection intensity were computed by using formulae suggested by Johnson et al. (1955). Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients for different characters in all possible combinations were calculated with formula given by Miller et al. (1958). Multiple regression analysis was done following procedure as given by Gomez and Gomez (1984).

Achievement/Findings:

Significantly positive correlations were found for number of effective tillers/hill with panicle length, panicle length with days to maturity and number of grains/panicle with days to maturity, On the other hand, negative and significant correlations were recorded for number of effective tillers/hill with number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight; and panicle length with 1000-grain weight, number of grains/panicle with 1000-grain weight. The characters number of grains/panicle and 1000-grain weight are known to be mutually compensating i.e. increase of one component would decrease the other. lnspite of the negative association of these two components, number of grains/panicle displayed positive and significant correlation with grain yield/plant. This indicated that compensation between these two yield components did not affect grain yield/plant.
