Sampling Method for Estimating Some Characters at Different Growth Stages for Transplanted Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Joydebpur to determine the effect of fixed and random sampling methods on the estimation of plant height, number of tillers hill-1 and number of green leaves hill^-1 at six sampling dates. The sampling methods were evaluated on three varieties (BR4, BR11 and N. Sail) under two plant spacing (20 cm x 20 cm and 25 cm x 25 cm). The plant characters obtained by the fixed sampling method were closer to those obtained by the random sampling method. The figures showed that plant height, number of tillers hill^{- 1}, number of green leaves hlll^-1 obtained by the fixed sampling method were very close to those obtained by the random sampling method. Both the methods were statistically similar, equally precise and accurate for measuring the plant characters irrespective of sampling date, variety and plant spacing as judged by the t-tests. Moreover, most of the percent deviations (absolute) of plant characters obtained for the fixed sampling method from the random sampling method were within 10% limits. For agricultural studies, such small deviations seem to be quite small, reasonable and acceptable. Although, the plants from the fixed sampling method might have received some recurrence disturbances as the same plants were used at each sampling date, but it was not reflected on the estimation of the characters. The results, therefore, suggested that any sampling method whether fixed or random could be used for estimating rice plant characters for rice research.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of the sampling methods (fixed and random) on the estimation of plant height, number of tillers hill^-1 and number of green leaves hill^-1 at different growth stages.

Methodology:

A "3 x 2" factorial experiment with variety and spacing was conducted in RCB design with 4 replications during 1982 T. Aman season. Three rice varieties viz., BR4 (long grain size), BR11 (medium grain size) and Nizersail (small grain size) and, two spacings i.e. 25 cm x 25 cm and 20 cm x 20 cm were included. The crop was grown in normal agronomic practices. Recommended dozes of fertilizers were applied; disease, insect and weed control measures were taken as and when necessary. Each plot size was 5m x 5m excluding two lines as border. Each plot was divided into two : one for harvest area and the other for sampling area. The harvest area was 3m x 3m from the center of each plot. The samples were taken from the rest area of each plot. From the sampling area of each plot, six hills were selected based on fixed sampling method. The following characters were recorded from the selected hills at an interval of 15 days starting from 20 days after transplanting (DAT):

Plant height
Number of tillers
Number of green leaves

t-test was performed to test the differences between the estimates obtained from the fixed and the random sampling methods for each character. Percent deviation (absolute) of a character obtained by the fixed sampling method from the random sampling method was determined

Achievement/Findings:

In the fixed sampling method, the plants might have received some recurrence disturbances as the same plants were used at different sampling dates. But, it was not reflected on the estimation of the plant characters. The results clearly suggested that both the fixed and the random sampling methods could be used for estimating transplanted rice plant characters. Therefore, any sampling method whether fixed or random could be used for estimating rice plant characters for rice research.
