Distribution of High Density Grain (hdg) in the Panicle and Rachis Branches of Different Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Grain distribution in the panicle and rachis of different varieties were studied. Among different position of tiller, mother panicle contributed more spikelet than primary tiller and primary tiller also produced more spikelet than secondary tiller Irrespective of varieties. Filled grain percentage were always higher in primary rachis branches than secondary rachis branches irrespective of variety and tiller position. Coarse grain BR14 produced the highest percent of high density grain (HDG) I.e. 9 to 29 percent of filled grain while BR5 produced 5 to 14 percent HDG of filled grains. The weight of the panicle was mainly attributed to low density grain (LDG) in fine variety.

Objectives:

To find a relationship betwe.en the high density grain (HDG) and low density grain (LDG) distribution in the panicle and rachis branches and the grain size of different varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute form July to September, 1994. Three different grain size BR14 (large), BAS (medium) and Tulsimala (small) were considered for this study. Twenty five days old single seedling per hill per pot were transplanted in four litre pot. The pots were fertilized a the rte of 60-40-40 N, P₂0₅ and K₂0 kg/ha. Two-third of N and all other fertilizer were applied basally and 1/3 of N was applied 7 days before visual panicle initiation. Each variety was replicated 10 times in 10 pots. The experiment was laid out using a completely randomized design (CAD). The mother tiller, two primary tillers and two secondary tillers were marked and identified upto maturity. The panicle of the marked tillers were collected. Spikelets were threshed by hand from primary and secondary rachis branches of the panicle separately. Then filled and unfilled grains were counted and expressed as percentage of the total spikelets. HDG and LDG were identified using a saline solution having the specific gravity of 1.2. The grains which sink into the solution were designated as HDG but which did not as LDG. Then HDG and LDG were counted.

Achievement/Findings:

For coarse grain variety BR14 had produced highest HDG. It was 23. to 28.8 percent in mother panicle, in primary panicle it was 23.2 to 27.1 percent and secondary panicle it was 9.6 to 11.2 percent respectively. For medium grain BR5 produce. less HDG than BR14. In BR5 mother panicle produced HDG of 14.1-8.3 percent of filled grain, where primary panicle produced 8.6%-5.5% and secondary panicle produced 10.6%· 8.7% irrespective of rachis branches. The HDG percentage was negligible in Tulsimala a the panicle weight due to the LDG.
