Field experiments were conducted in the High Barind Tract of Bangladesh (AEZ 26) at high toposequence for 2 years to evaluate the efficiency of different N fertilizers on rainfed lowland rice and to explore the possibilities of cultivating chickpea after rice in the single cropped rice area of that environment. Nine fertilizer treatments- absolute control, PK. NPK, NPKS, controlled-release N (CAN) + PKS, farmyard manure (FYM), 50% FYM + 50% NPK, neemcake, and biogas slurry - were tested in a randomized complete block design. Chickpea was grown after rice without fertilizer. The study was conducted for 2 years in the same layout. Results showed that the application of N fertilizers significantly increase rice yield over the control. Applications of PK alone showed no response compared with the response no-fertilizer (control) application. Nitrogen was found to be the most limiting macro element in the system. The highest grain yield of rice was obtained in the plots that received the CR-NPKS treatment followed by NPKS. NPK, the combined application of 1/2 FYM + 1/2 NPK, and neemcake. However, yield differences among the treatments were not statistically significant. Among the organic sources of N, neemcake had a better performance in grain yield and N efficiency than  that of FYM and Biogas slury. Because of its medium duration (125-130 day), modern rice variety BRRI dhan32 escaped, the water stress (drought) that commonly occurred in October because of low rainfall (21mm) in the High Barind Tract. Moreover, it was possible to grow chickpea after rice using the residual soil moisture. Grain yield of chickpea varied from 1.80 to 2.59 t ha-1 but the yield difference among the treatment was insignificant.

  1. To evaluate the efficiency of different N fertilizers on rainfed lowland rice.
  2. To explore the possibilities of cultivating chickpea after rice in the single cropped rice area.

Nine fertilizer management practices were tested in randomized complete block design under rainfed conditions. The nine fertilizer treatments were the control, PK, NPK, NPKS, controlled-release N (CRN)+PKS, farmyard manure (FYM), 1/2 FYM+ 1/2NPK, neemcake, and biogas slurry. The doses of N, P205, K20 and S were adjusted to 80, 6O, 40, and 10kg ha-1 respectively, for the treatments that received the elements. The neemcake and biogas slurry treatments were adjusted to receive 80 kg N ha-1. Chickpea was grown after the harvest of the T. Aman crop. The experiment continued for 2 consecutive years in the same layout. Cultural practices : Thirty-three to 30-day old seedlings of modern rice variety BRRI dhan32 were transplanted at 20 x 20 cm spacing with 2-3 seedlings hill-1on 17-24 July. The rice crop was harvested on 20-28 October. Chickpea seeds were sown at the rate of 35 kg ha-1 in the mid November and harvested in April. Statistical analysis : The experimental data were examined using analysis of variance and means were compared with least significant difference or as appropriate. Economic analysis : Rice equivalent yields (REY) were computed by converting the yields of chickpea into yield of rice on the basis of prevailing market price of the individual crops. A simple partial budgeting was used to compare the economic benefit of different fertilizers used in the rice-chickpea systems.
