Monitoring Performance of Raised Mangrove and Non-mangrove Species in the Sundarbans.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Growth performance of mangrove and non-mangrove experimental plantations in the Sundarbans have been developed.There are some poorly stocked raised lands and poorly regenerated or vacant areas in the different saline and non saline areas of the Sundarbans. Those areas were successfully planted with some (Non mangrove) and some selective mangrove tree species. It is now essential to monitor growth and yield of the existing plantations of mangrove and non-mangrove species in the Sundarbans.A total of 6.0 ha experimental plantations of mesophytic species and 3.5 ha mangrove species were maintained. Growth and survival data of mangrove and non-mangrove species were collected and analyzed.

Knowledge on supplementing artificial regeneration to improve growing stock by planting commercially important mangrove species over poorly stocked areas and mesophytic (non mangrove) species on the raised lands of the Sundarbans.

Location: Plantation Technique and Forest Management with in the vacant or non commercial areas of different three salinity zones of the Sundabans.The specific locations are- Bogi, Katakhali, Baniakhali, Kasiabad, Bozboza, and Kalagachia.

Objectives:

To determine the growth status and survival percentage of raised mangrove and non-mangrove species
To enrich the vacant and non commercial sites of the Sundarbans with the selective mangrove and non mangrove species with trial basis.

Methodology:

Maintenance of raised mangrove and non-mangrove species by weeding, painting and collecting growth data twice a year (October-November, April-May). The study was conducted since 01-07-1993 to 30-06-2006. The study will be extended for long term monitoring. In the study the following activities were done.

Maintenance of experimental plantations by painting and numbering of sample trees, regular weeding, climber cutting and fitting-fixing of signboards, etc.
Collection of survival and growth data from the experimental plantations once a year.
Analysis of data.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 6.0 ha non-mangrove and 3.5 ha mangrove experimental plantations were maintained by weeding, climber cutting, fitting-fixing signboards and painting and numbering of sample trees. Jarul , Rain tree and Sada Koroi are the promising Non mangrove ( mesophytic) species in the raise land of the Sundarbans and Sundri, Passur, Dhundul, Jhana, kankra are the major switable selective mangrove species in the poorly regenerated areas for establishment of plantation.
