Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nursery and plantation techniques of dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) and kirpa (Lumnitzera racemosa) which are most essential for conservation of those species in the Sundarbans because the natural populations of these two mangrove species have declined in a large scale. So, To increase the productivity of forests through use of appropriate nursery and plantation techniques of the forest tree species were formed. It was protect and preserve the forest ecosystem, biodiversity conservation and sustainable production through implement these practices.

Objectives:

To develop a standard nursery and a plantation techniques for dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) and kirpa (Lumnitzera racemosa).
To improve the nursery technique and establishment of plantation technique to conserve the species in the Sundarbans.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during 01-07-2002 to 03-06-2006. Collection of seeds, raising seedlings with different treatments and different nursery media, and raising plantations with dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) and kirpa (Lumnitzera racemosa) were assembled at three salinity zones with different spacing and collection of survival and growth data from the trial plantations at six months interval, setting up siltation gauge at every experimental plots and recording of data were analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Development of nursery and plantation techniques of dhundul (Xylocarpus granatum) and kirpa (Lumnitzera racemosa) which are most essential for conservation of those species in the Sundarbans have been developed by dint of artificial nursery raising and plantation establishment with those species.Because the natural populations of these two mangrove species have declined in a large scale from the Sundarbans mangrove Forest. So, To increase the productivity of forests through use of appropriate nursery and plantation techniques of the those forest tree species have been conducted towards the Sundarbans to protect and preserve the forest ecosystem, biodiversity conservation and sustainable production with in the coastal zone of Bangladesh.
