Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A lot of sundri trees have been dying due to a disorder known as top dying disorder , caused by different environmental, physicochemical and pathological factors. Studies have been conducted but actual cause for the disorder has not yet been ascertained. So, a study for improvement of the species is necessary. Increased yield by capturing higher genetic gain, control of pests and diseases of forest tree species, forest resource management, biodiversity conservation and sustainable production. So, to increase the productivity of forests by higher genetic gain and control of pests and diseases, protect and preserve the forest ecosystem of the Sundarbabs the undertaken study will have to resolved the problem in future. But the study did not achieve its real goal.

Objectives:

To develop nursery and plantation techniques of sundri.

Methodology:

It was collected seeds from the selected trees and raising seedlings in polybags and nursery beds during July 2002 to June 2004.. Observation on germination of the seeds, survival and growth performance of the seedlings in the nursery were maintained. Raising plantations and recording survival and growth data from the experimental sundari plantations were collected. More over the following activities were done.

Raising 3600 seedlings of sundari in polybags and maintenance of seedlings in the nursery.
Raising experimental plantations at 3 salinity zones at different spacings in a Randomised Complete Block Design.
Maintenance of experimental plantations by regular weeding and fencing.
Collection of survival and growth data from the experimental plantations at six months interval.
Analysis of field data.

Achievement/Findings:

The study for improvement of the species is necessary to conserve sundri population through multiplication of healthy (top dying free) trees in the Sundarbans. Genetic improvement of sundri trees were regenerated by long term research activities through developing nursery and plantation techniques. The following achievements were recognized. Seeds were collected from previously selected 30. healthy sundri trees at 3 locations.

- No of seeds per trees were 20 at each location

- 200 seeds were collected at each location

- Seedlings were raised with 600 seeds in the poly bags at Dhangmari Research Station.

- 20 branch cuttings were collected per selected trees

13.55m. and 18.96 cm.Compartment no 26 (Dhangmari) respectively.
